She could possibly be a pet quality buckeye. I'm not sure about the comb though.

A breeder told me that size comes from the hens, not the roosters, so pick your largest girls.

Willow has excellent beak, eye & comb features. I hope that she's going to be part of your breeding program!

I'm guessing around 3 months old. I find mine don't reach full weight until they're about a year old, but around 2 lbs at 3-4 months.

lol Buckeyes really aren't a good breed for wing sexing. When they're day olds you have a somewhat good chance of being able to tell sex. If there is a slightly darker stripe on their back, it's a good chance that they are pullets. Once they start to feather, you'll just have to wait and see...

If anyone is in Canada & is looking for buckeyes this year, I'll have hatching eggs & chicks available. If you're in Alberta, I have POL pullets and cockerels available.

They look terrific! How often do you have to change legbands? I tried zip ties last year and their legs grew so fast the they started cutting off their circulation. When I tried to get the band off of one of them I ended up cutting off the tip of his toe.

Mine definitely felt the heat a lot more than the chanteclers. Anything higher than 25c and they we laying around with their wings outstretched and panting. They fared fine in -40c/f. Definitely a winter hardy breed.

There are numerous Buckeye associations on Facebook. Jeff Lay runs one simply called Buckeye Chickens.

She's got a really nice line. I have too much of an upward slope at the tail that I need to work on.

If they're from Jeff Lay's line, you're getting the best of the best, although, as you said, who knows how many generations ago. One thing that Jeff taught me last year is to avoid chipmunks. You want a solid colour on the chicks. I only got a couple that didn't have the chipmunk markings, so...

Unfortunately, the name my pet chicken tells you a lot. She's definitely pet quality, however she's definitely a buckeye. Her feathers will probably darken a bit more as she matures.

One of the best buckeye breeders out there.

I know that there is a very highly regarded breeder in Oklahoma, but I don't know what his name is.

P.s. from what I've seen, they actually don't do very well in heat. Mine really suffered at temps over 25c (about 78F).

I will be. Only problem is, I'm in Canada.

Have you tried the American buckeye Club on Facebook? Jeff is there, although he doesn't sell anymore. He may be able to hook you up.

Hmmm...eastern WA isn't that far from me.... Too bad there's this thing called a border, otherwise I'd try to help you out. I know people who know people. I may be able to help you find some if you'd like.

Ugh. That stinks. Are you able to keep your roo so that you can build up your numbers?
  20. The Farmers' Daughter

    The Buckeye Thread

Looks like a roo to me. I've never seen long feathers like that on a pullet. My roo didn't start crowing until he was 9 or 10 months old, so you may be waiting a while for that.
