lol
Buckeyes really aren't a good breed for wing sexing.
When they're day olds you have a somewhat good chance of being able to tell sex. If there is a slightly darker stripe on their back, it's a good chance that they are pullets. Once they start to feather, you'll just have to wait and see...
If anyone is in Canada & is looking for buckeyes this year, I'll have hatching eggs & chicks available.
If you're in Alberta, I have POL pullets and cockerels available.
They look terrific!
How often do you have to change legbands? I tried zip ties last year and their legs grew so fast the they started cutting off their circulation. When I tried to get the band off of one of them I ended up cutting off the tip of his toe.
Mine definitely felt the heat a lot more than the chanteclers. Anything higher than 25c and they we laying around with their wings outstretched and panting. They fared fine in -40c/f. Definitely a winter hardy breed.
If they're from Jeff Lay's line, you're getting the best of the best, although, as you said, who knows how many generations ago.
One thing that Jeff taught me last year is to avoid chipmunks. You want a solid colour on the chicks. I only got a couple that didn't have the chipmunk markings, so...
Unfortunately, the name my pet chicken tells you a lot. She's definitely pet quality, however she's definitely a buckeye. Her feathers will probably darken a bit more as she matures.
Hmmm...eastern WA isn't that far from me....
Too bad there's this thing called a border, otherwise I'd try to help you out.
I know people who know people. I may be able to help you find some if you'd like.
Looks like a roo to me. I've never seen long feathers like that on a pullet.
My roo didn't start crowing until he was 9 or 10 months old, so you may be waiting a while for that.
