They aren't going to challenge the Leghorns but will give most 'dual purpose birds' a hard run for the money! I think they are especially good layers for such a large breed.
Sometime you have to go bold. My brother was 'bold' (stupid) enough to bring a bunch of well bred (understatement) Chanteclers across the border and I managed to get 20 of them sans frais. There must be a way to get some good Bucks into Canada, even keeping within the law or perhaps just...
The first time I bought Buckeyes they came from a pretty good hatchery but I don't have to be hit over the head twice.
When I buy Buckeyes again they will come from a breeder of quality birds..
At this point in our breeding program, I personally couldn't care less but I do wonder what Nettie would think about crossing her Buckeyes every which way? With whatever bird or mix of birds and for whatever reason?

I'm certainly no expert...either with chickens in general nor Buckeyes in particular but I do know that it's not all that uncommon for a single combed chick to be hatched into a clutch of pure Buckeyes. It happens...likely more than many folks will ever know.
I don't know the value of these...
Reading battle signs can be tricky. What might have looked to you as the Silver giving battle might quite likely best be described as the coon dragging the bird by the head while it flapped valiantly or hysterically to get away.
I'm a coon hunter and I've seen coons whip some pretty big...
