Some pictures of the Buckeyes we are raising. They did the best this year I must say. I had an awful strain of Cocci late summer and not a single Buckeye developed it. One hardy breed!
This is probably the only breed I kept back enough birds to choose my breeders for next spring. They may be...
They pay top dollar in China town in Toronto for silkie culls. It's a delicacy. I just don't think I could do the black meat/skin/bones. Maybe.. One day.. :P
Well here chickens aren't covered in any protection act, which is a shame. There are a few folks I would report if there was..
None of them ever died from it. Well except the time the lightning hit the clothes line..
My grandfather (the one who grew up with his father doing this) built me...
My great grandfather used to put them in feed sacks and hang them on the clothes line to break broodiness. He was a crass man, but said it worked every time. I'd do something like this with wire cages if I had to break the broodiness (I usually indulge them though). Has anyone ever heard of...
her eyeball looks okay, it's the tissue around it that is really damaged. It was quite swollen tonight, but she is laying and eating and drinking. Doesn't seem bothered by it... I just want to be sure no one irritates the eye any more than it already is.
Also, thanks for your comments on my...
I have a silkie that is dyed green from Easter before I got her. Ha. We call her Ivy. :P
ETA: Picture for Apdeb ;) It's when I first got her. She's in a pen now so it's hard to take photos of her.
Not that loud, and not that often. Nothing compared to my Rocks, at least not yet :P He's not an alpha, so he's quite mellow.
My female buckeye had an eye injury and is in seclusion. I thought she had her eye pecked out, but it looks like she caught it on something and tore the muscle around...
They do better when they are fully mature in show (in any breed), but can be shown pretty much any time. You have less chances of winning with a young bird under 6 months unless it is a remarkable specimen.
I like how quickly the buckeyes mature.. at least my buckeyes.. They are very large...
Best in breed.
Best in class was a RIR
This is the class winner
Waterfowl always seem to win our shows in this area. A Black East Indie Duck won grand champion.
My Goose won Champion Heavy Goose and Reserve Champion Goose. Happy with that :)
I was sad that the APA Canadian Nationals only had my Buckeyes in there for the breed. My male beat out my female. I expected as much, he is a looker.
She has started to lay, I didn't even realize it until showing them, as she had an egg in her cage.
23 weeks old.
She's about 19...
Good addition. I only free range. None of my range areas are overloaded with poop, so chances are much lower of them having a flock wide problem.
I need to stop assuming most people do as well :) If I couldn't free range, I'd have rotational pens or runs. Let one regrow while using the other...
Same here.
I want birds that can live without chemicals. If one gets a worm overload, I will cull before treating. I don't want weakness in my birds.
I haven't wormed ever.
If they all have a worm overload, that is something I am doing wrong, so only in that case would I treat.
I try to...
It's what they have. Red, slate and then red again. So I'm glad I figured it out, and that they BOTH are Buckeyes.
I plan on keeping them. I knew from the get go that the RIR seemed strange looking in comparison. They didn't look the same, except for colour. Now I know why!
Does anyone have a picture of what they mean by slate bar?
When I type it into google, this is what I get. If this is it, both have it. I just checked. Female does have a pea comb, but it's not defined. They are both heavy set birds. They feel meaty. Female has two fingers between pelvic...
Thank you!
Now I can say what they are without feeling foolish for calling them RIRs. The male I got rid of was, and he was scrawny in comparison!
Nice beefy birds with the best foraging I have. Comparable with my CX for distance in range. Yes my CX range far and wide.
