My wife and I decided to raise some chicks this past spring, started with some RIR. We had never heard of Buckeye chickens. My wife, being an Ohio native, Just had to have some. So, I got her some for Mothers Day. We absolutely love how they come running every time they see us. They are so...
And a Happy Thanksgiving it was. I got my first Buckeye egg ever yesterday morning. I am not planning a hatching until early March but is sure exciting getting my first egg.
This will be my first year hatching my own buckeyes, but I plan to start incubating sometime in January. How long after I put lights on them should they ramp up on egg laying?
I guess I will keep them separate. I was just trying to cut down on feeding and watering from 5 to 4 coops. They are only in the coops at night with large runs during the day. I would certainly hate to lose one if them.
Newbie question. I have an 8 month old RIR cockerel in with 7 6 month old RIR cockerels, and I have 2 6 month old Buckeye cockerels in another grow-out area. Can I combine them or are they too old to add the 2 with them?
Has anyone ever had issues with buckeye cockerels being "aggressive". Out of 10, I have one that is a little mean. When I walk into their run he runs up and try's to flog me. Some of the others bite my legs( I am usually wearing shorts) and a couple bite my shoes but only 1 or 2 have flogged...
I am wanting to combine my 19 week old buckeye pullets with 5 hens that are laying. Is that wise and if I do, should I continue feeding layer rations for the layers or feed my game bird conditioner that I am feeding my pullets?
Laura, I took this picture that you had posted earlier with me to the pen and to my new inexperienced eye still could not tell. I guess I will have to wait until they mature a little more.
