Great post! To me, their quirky personality is the most wonderful thing about Buckeyes. :)

Hmm don't believe I said a word about heritage. He asked for someone with Buckeyes that had 3 qualities: Meaty, good layers and will hatch their own young. The person I mentioned has Buckeyes with all three of those qualities. Not every line of Buckeyes has all three of those qualities, but...

Chris McCary is who you are looking for. His birds cover all three things you are looking for. You will find him on the breeder's list in my signature.

Congrats to you friend! Nice to be validated by two different judges on the same day. Doesn't always happen that way at a double show so he must have been a really nice bird to have both judges select him.

chickadoodles, I have personal experience with birds from Chris and Laura is absolutely correct, you won't be disappointed. I have yet to come across a line that lays or produces for the table better, and though he doesn't show as often as others, his record there when he does show speaks for...

My Buckeye pullets have always kept laying straight thru the winter, no heat lamps or lights. If they don't, select those that do and cull the rest. Hens, I have always selected the ones that molted the latest and the quickest, and culled out the others. This keeps them laying as long as...

Glad more people are starting to show Buckeyes. There hasn't been much competition out there for the most part for those showing the last couple years. Have fun :)

Yes if you go out to sit in the yard you will have a Buckeye perched on your lap and they will 'talk' your ear off too. It always cracked my hubby up when they jump up there and then nod off to sleep like its the coziest bed.

Buckeyes are fan.tas.tic in the cold. My old profile pic showed a couple girls with their heads lowered down in the cold while waiting their turn at a nest box during a week of -20 wind chills.

There was a gal in the old Buckeye thread that crossed a Buckeye rooster over a Delaware hen I think for sex links. Just a min and I will see if I can find one of her posts.

well, since stubs are a DQ and the other things are not seems they are a little more important to eradicate than a little extra fluff. Heck one line is continuing to throw single combs after 10 yrs and now wry back. A little extra fluff doesn't seem so bad to me compared to that. I've seen...

Ok I stink at math, but if I add up how many eggs I would miss in the time a broody was sitting, and even add in the 5 wks she is with the chicks, I would still make more if I sold the chicks vs the eggs she isn't laying in that time? And not likely you would get 21 eggs in 21 days.

Since they want a Buckeye that will gain weight well with a lot of foraging and go broody and raise chicks, that may not be the direction they want to go. sahmhomesteader- Find a breeder that raises Buckeyes the way you want to. If you want good foragers, birds that gain weight well while...

Yes, I don't like it if their head is so big that they look like a dullard meat bird rather than an active, dual purpose bird. There is a reason the standard says medium!
