    The Buckeye Thread

The best way I've found to learn more is to talk to everyone, listen closely, compare and contrast ideas, and then make your own conclusions about how to proceed. Just as with pretty much any other breed, you'll find a range of opinions, ideas, pet peeves, and the like. And what makes me happy...

Always great to hear Buckeyes doing well at shows!

Typical use of cayenne is to keep rodents out of the feed. Some people think it has antimicrobial/immune benefits... I won't vouch for those and especially not in birds. I doubt there's any science for that. But there are even multiple threads about doing so here on BYC. I've never heard of...

Birds don't have receptors for capsaicin like mammals do. That's why they will eat the peppers and disperse the seeds. It's a common addition to birdseed to keep squirrels out.

The Buckeye is coming back from a long dark decline, and this is a reason to celebrate. We don't have the depth of breeder/exhibitors with decades of experience as some other breeds do. We're barely even at one decade for most people showing them now. I have judged competitions, though not...

All of ours are some combination of Urch and ALBC, yes. I know how dark you like your birds, bluface3, and I would say both that I'm sure he's not as dark as you are going for, but also that the picture/terrible lighting doesn't capture his color accurately. In person I'm very satisfied with...

This is one of ours at just shy of 6 months. Looks like it is going to be a good year for Buckeyes everywhere!

I'm sorry for your loss, chickencreek. I'm glad Peep managed to escape.

Thanks, bluface, I think this year's pullets are even better.

Sorry, I didn't understand the rule and I screwed up. These are public domain images created for the 1915 standard that may be useful to the questioner. (The 2010 standard picture shows a female with a larger head and a larger tail, with more of the length of the back incorporated into the tail...

She is on the lanky side compared to mine - I'd like to see a fuller breast and the head looks small for the body, but a single picture can lie. Different lighting, a different stance, and she might look quite different. Edited by staff

I love watching the Buckeyes play in the garden, and I love this too, a great triple-purpose breed: meat, eggs, and kid-raising.

It honestly shouldn't be a loaded question. I'll say at 10 weeks old that you can see serious off-type faults but not necessarily much else about which ones will be terrific. In this thread (and the earlier one) there are lots of great pictures at all ages, and going through from the...

Feed is very regional, and the feed tags don't really tell you all the story of what is in the food. My own pet peeve is that most tags don't have kcal/lb, kind of a basic point. (I choose a feed that does, and is fixed formula.) Even national brands are usually regionally produced and may not...

I can't touch any feed around here for less than $16.99/ 50 lbs. Chick starter is actually less than the layer here. I do a game show meeting with my 4-H kids every year, and I always like to include a category that a new member might get like "chickens in film" or "chicken idioms." I stumped...

For what it's worth, maybe it's different for y'all in the midwest, but all the feeds I choose from are about the same cost regardless of the percentage protein. What drives the cost up is organic or GMO-free, and people pick those or don't for their own reasons. (I'm using the King brand Pro/Am...

I like the treadle feeders for any birds that are free ranging or have an open yard because otherwise I get a lot of uninvited guests to the buffet. I also see them get the hanging feeders swinging around a lot. I try to put a pedestal under them to reduce that.

Spent a lot of today just sitting out and enjoying this year's birds, to try to get a sense of what we want to keep and what not, what issues there are and aren't. Even though it was too hot out, it's always fun to hang out with the Buckeyes. They're active, curious, love to forage in the weeds...

I always find the feed question to be a challenge. For the record, the Purina that makes dog food belongs to Nestlé now and Purina Mills, which makes the livestock feeds (including poultry) is wholly separate, owned by Land O'Lakes. I have been using a California feed when I can, King Pro-Am...
