Hello Idaho! I'm in the Boise area and I'm looking for fertilized eggs to give to a broody hen, later this spring. I would just like to know what's available in the area. I am particularly looking for Olive Eggers, Americanas, or the chocolate brown egg layers. Thank you!
You can also use a "Crowing collar" that stops or dramatically decreases growing. It's actually a very cool option for keeping a rooster in a neighborhood or part of town that doesn't allow roosters! Look it up on YouTube.
there is a farmer out in Kuuna named Chad with a ton of chickens, and he will take any unwanted roosters or hens. So it's a good alternative if you don't want to kill your young Cockrells.
The SBEL thing is very interesting to me. I have never heard of this before. I actually have an Americana rooster and a leghorn hen. So, if I hatch some of their fertilized eggs I'd get the SBEL? Is this a mix or breed that people know about? I was thinking about selling chicks/fertile eggs next...
Is there a way to determine if your chickens have worms, other than by a veterinarian? I did read a health article that recommended deworming annually as a precaution. Is that common practice around here?
Also, we are looking for a small shed to use as a coop. Our current one is too small. If...
Where do I buy Fipronil? Is that an over the counter medication? And is that something I can use on the chicks? Also, would I need to throw away their eggs after treatment?
So, considering my situation and multigenerational flock, should I go ahead and empty the coop, scrub it with soap and...
Well, I checked the hens and we have creepy crawlies! I don't know what they are exactly, but they are very tiny, almost like dots. I saw them around the vents of all the hens, and noticed that a number of them do have diarrhea too. A couple of the hens have some feather loss and bright red skin...
Hello There Neighbor! Thank you for the excellent information. I wanted to make sure that I'm not missing anything, as far what other Idahoans do to keep a healthy flock. We've been raising chickens for just over two years and absolutely love it! I told my husband that I would like to keep...
Well, we have a group of 10 hens that were 2 in May, and some chicks being raised by one of the hens. They share a smallish coop and free range a large fenced yard every day.
So, I've had 3 hens now start to slowly fade...weight loss, stop laying, diarrhea, listlessness, pale colored combs. It...
Can anyone recommend a good veterinarian in the Treasure Valley that will see chickens? Or is there someone local to the Treasure Valley who is very knowledgeable about poultry health issues? We are having a mysterious health problem in our flock and I'd like to get it figured out.
Hi, We are in Boise and have a small flock of hens. We have chosen to use a heat lamp at night in our coop during the coldest temps. If it is getting down towards the 20's we will set a heat lamp up in the coop, with a red bulb so it doesn't disrupt their night/day cycle, and we use a timer so...
Hello, I just wanted to say "Hi" on the Idaho thread! We are in Boise and have a small backyard flock of 8 hens, and currently have a broody BO, Beatrice, sitting on a big nest of fertilized eggs! So excited for that new adventure!
I'd also like to talk to other Idahoans from around the Boise...
