I have a jack russel and he chased my goats at first but I trained him to "leave it" and they are fine now. I can leave him with the goats and have no worries. I even trust him around my baby chicks. He learned the animals are mine and off limits to him. Maybe you could try teaching the dog to...
thats how I got my goats to get used to me. I only fed them from my hand or while holding the dish and I would just sit down with them while they ate. In only a few weeks I couldn't get them off of me! Now they run to me and will follow me and answer when I call them.
Adding to that, would a goat eat feathers to get more protein(similar to why a chicken would be eating an other chickens feathers?) Or is that just because the goat wants to chew on everything? They also eat the fur off of each other, almost helping to shed the other goat out if that makes...
I successfully kept my goats and chickens together all winter. There was a separate goat shed and chicken coop but they shared a pen. I was able to make it so the goats couldnt get into the chicken coop and thats where I kept the feed. But.they shared a heated water bucket all winter as well as...
I guess they are taking advantage of people who are new to goats and don't know any better... ill actually talk to my aunts equine vet to see if he can recommend someone better
Congrats :D
I will find another vet for sure... that was the vet recommended to me but I think they revamped everything recently. Even getting a fecal done is $36 when its only $12 at my dogs vet...
I know I can do the banding myself but.the dis budding im a bit nervous about and I want to have my ducks in...
That makes sense. I had read about a grass fed Guernsey cow
Wow.... well the paper says that they sent the samples to Cornell. So maybe Cornell has much higher prices.... well now I know. Thank you! I might look for another vet because when my goats kid I'm going to need help banding and...
Okay thank you very much! I'll use that when I go back out to them later.
I found the breakdown of charges for testing my goats.
The CAE was $59/goat
Johnes was $18/goat
CL was $50/goat
Then they charged me a $69 house call and $65 herd examination....
I had read somewhere that cows that are only fed grass produce a better tasting milk than cows fed corn. Thats why I.thought goats on browse only might produce different tasting milk.
Does anyone have a body condition index.type thing for goats? Im starting to shed my goats out and they feel a...
I just got my goats tested. The breeder that told me about the test said that if you send it away it should cost around $25 but I don't know how to draw blood so I asked my vet to come out thinking it would only be the $25 plus the farm call. Well I got my bill and it was over $400 to test 2...
If you arent feeding grain do you still feed alfalfa or just let them get everything from pasture? Also do you think it effects the taste of the milk? One last question, what is cob and where do you buy that? Lol
It's probably better not to get a really rich hay like alfalfa unless they are pregnant or being milked but I think that as long as it's good quality and not moldy anything will do. I've been told to ask for good horse hay when you buy it or else they may give you crappy hay with the assumption...
They should have some long stemmed grass hay in addition to what you are feeding. Alfalfa pellets are good but they should only replace 50% of long stemmed hay. The fibers in pellets aren't long enough to provide the right roughage requirements. If you add some free choice hay and a free choice...
Anyone that milks their goats I have a question... I know your supposed to milk every 12 hours but I am a waitress so I work 4 nights a week and I do.get home around 9. Would I be able to milk my goats a little bit late some times? Or do you have to stay exactly at 12 hours apart? (I havent even...
