I sped up a video of one of mine hatching today, not the greatest quality but super cute ;) This is one of my shipped eggs, a little blue cochin chick ;)
Morning of hatch day here, eggs weren't set until 9pm on a Friday but so far I've got 5 of 13 babies out and two more pipped. 6 of the 13 are shipped eggs, so far 3 of those have hatched which is GREAT! Hoping the other 3 do too ;) they're my blue cochins
Here's an updated pic of the babies I hatched the 1st and 2nd <3 some of them are moving to new homes soon because I ended up with way too many so it's bittersweet.
The ones I have in the incubator now are doing great! I put 16 eggs in and 2 weren't fertile, one is a double yolk that so far...
I agree with this, I was home alone the first time I had to cull a chick and I cried like a baby :'( Sometimes its a necessary evil when we "farm" we have to be ready for the death too :( I can't say it gets much easier as I've had to do it more
I just had a hatch Monday and I've got the bator cleaned, sanitized and putting more in either tomorrow or the next day >blush< I had a super awesome ebay seller send me some more eggs when I inquired about buying some more so hoping to get some blue cochins! and I'll stick a few more from my...
I had 2 that pipped WAY Too high this time and they were able to completely unzip the egg and even managed to pop the top off struggling, but they were not able to get their head popped out of the top of them I had to snatch them out real quick and break a little more egg away so they could...
Looks like the chicks already mostly hatched? Is it just a little left of the yolk sac and stuff maybe just changed colors? What happened when the chick finished coming out of the egg?
And morning of hatch day my hatch is DONE! I have 4 more babies in the bator this morning and the other 3 eggs in there looked like they stopped growing around week 2 :( Poor little things! But I got 24 hatched out of 27 eggs that went into lockdown and one baby passed shortly after hatching...
On day 24 I start giving up :( I've done float tests on 24 or 25 to see if the egg wiggles in the water, if it does I'll dry it off and give it a few more days, if it doesn't I usually call it a loss. One thing I did this time that seemed to really increase my hatch rate, I locked down on day...
And they'll go in the official brooder after the first 2 or 3 days, I like to keep them close for a few days then they go in a big 2 foot by 4 foot brooder box I built for in the coop :D
LOL Yep! I got all but 2 eggs from a local Farm here in WV.
In the Mix are Blue Laced Red Wyandotte(2), Wheaton Ameracana(1 with one more pipped), a Silkie(1), Partridge Cochins(what most are LOL) and I believe one white cochin, and I got one white one with no feather feet so I think A delaware...
Little impatient chicks couldn't wait for hatch day tomorrow ;) That's OK I don't mind because it was a holiday from school and my 7 year old daughter was SO excited to watch so many hatch!! So far all but 7 of 26 have hatched and 3 of those have pipped, one is chirping around but not pipped...
You don't want to wash the eggs at all, I get an AWESOME hatch with my Hovabator Genesis so hope you have good luck too :D Make sure you store them pointy side down and turn them at least once or twice a day while gathering them for hatching and it's best if they are 10 days or less old when...
Update on mine, on my 7 day candling I had to throw out 10 eggs that didn't develop at all, they were either just not fertilized or something was wrong with them, a few had that "spotted" look to them when candling and the ones I threw out hadn't developed AT ALL.
So that leaves me with 24 eggs...
when my humidity gets higher than I want I just remove the plug that is in my incubator. I did one dry hatch and didn't get good results so I stick with the 40-50% range until lockdown then shoot for 60-70% at lockdown. My Genesis Hovabator actually does quite well with keepin the humidity and...
Today is day 7 on my eggs set to hatch September 3rd! This will be my 4th hatch in my hovabator, my last hatch only had about 70% but I had THREE Power outages during that hatch so it was still pretty good. I drove about an hr and half to get these because I'm so tired of the bad hatch rate...
