I have been using a galvanized waterer for a couple of years now, and it's been fine. Today, I scrubbed it out with bleach and now it's overflowing and won't hold water. Is this a thing with those metal waterers?
GAH. How hard does this have to be? I am so frustrated.
I was picturing the water droplets freezing instantly on the metal rods. I was picturing vertical water nipples, rather than horizontal ones. For some reason, I never looked into those. Thank you.
That's what I use here in Michigan, a base heater and a galvanized waterer. It has worked perfectly for us as long as it's out of the direct wind. The only times it freezes is when the temperature gets to -5 ish.
Thank you for sharing this! I love the Harris waterer best, it's clean and easy to use in the summer. I will fiddle with ours more and see if I can get the thing to work again.
Since I started this thread, I have been using the metal waterer with a base heater, and it's lasted a couple of years so far, and works out great. Unless it's very cold (below zero), the water doesn't freeze. This has been a great solution for us.
A bit of an update just in case anyone is having as much trouble as me trying to keep the water from freezing or overflowing.
I tried putting my top-fill waterer inside a Fortex pan to prevent overflow, but it didn't work. The pan filled right up and overflowed anyway. Talk about frustrating...
OK, I purchased the above nipple type waterer. I don't think my chickens have a clue that they are supposed to drink out of those hangy things. I let their pan waterer go dry, thinking they'd be motivated to look around for water. I pushed the water tips in front of them and got water to drip...
Thanks for the suggestions!
I think I will try this and lower an aquarium heater into it. I'll let you guys know how it works in the coldest part of the winter.
Hello chicken folks,
I need help! I am about to purchase my third waterer because of overflow. I am reluctant to use a nipple water system because the waterer is outside and we are in Michigan, where it can get really cold.
When I started my flock in January, I bought this waterer (Farm-Tuff...
