Most vets could do a nasal swab for bacteria or mycoplasma. Here is a link about testing and for the poultry dept, of Saskatchewan: http://poultryhealthtoday.com/avian-mycoplasma-diagnostics/ Department of Animal and Poultry Science

Well if it was IB, that is only supposed to make them carriers for 5 months to a year. Any chicks hatched within that time would be exposed. With MG, they can be carriers for life, and it can be transmitted through hatching eggs. Thus, the good part about testing.

    Chicken gurgling

Most times it is difficult to tell one disease from the other, if there is no facial/eye swelling, or thick nasal or eye discharge. Each disease can have several strains around the country, ranging from mild to severe. IB is a lot less threatening than MG. If you have some time to skim over...

Mycoplasma is considered to be a bacterium, but does not have a cell wall as most bacteria do. Yes, it can respond to some antibiotics such as Tylan, oxytetracycline, erythromycin, and others. Viruses such as Infectious bronchitis or infectious laryngotracheitis, or fungi such aspergillosis...

    Chicken gurgling

I would respectfully disagree with infectious bronchitis being the same thing as mycoplasma (MG.) one (IB) is a virus while MG is a mycoplasma, similar to bacteria. MG may respond to antibiotic while IB does not. However, many times these diseases may occur together with one being a secondary...

    Chicken gurgling

Infectious bronchitis is a viral disease that is the most common respiratory disease in chickens. It usually affects the whole flock over several weeks. Chickens will become carriers for up to a year, so don't add or hatch new birds until that time has passed. Symptoms are sneezing and snicking...

    Chicken gurgling

Have you added new birds from outside your flock recently? Check their crops to make sure they are emptying overnight, since a sour or impacted crop may cause gurgling. Penicillin is not that good for a respiratory disease. Tylan, oxytetracycline, or Gallimycin are commonly used, and may be...

    Chicken gurgling

Welcome to BYC. Gurgling is not normal. Sometimes liquid in the throat from a full crop or a crop problem could cause gurling, or it could be a respiratory problem or disease. Is there any nasal or eye drainage, or sneezing? Check the crop to make aure that it is emotying by morning.

Tylan 50 has 50 mg of tylosin in each ml or cc, where Tylan 200 has four times as much or 200mg per ml/cc. Many feel that tylan 200 can be damaging to the breast muscle where it is injected.

You're welcome. Sounds like a good way to give the meds. Giving Tylan into the muscle in the breast, the needle is inserted 1/2 to 3/4 inch straight in to the fattest part of the breast muscle. Rotate sides of breast daily. Since Tylan is for intramuscular use, I wouldn't use it subcutaneously...

Sorry that she is worse. Start her on Tylan50 which is injectable into the breast muscle--dose is 1/2 to 1 cc/ml for 3-5 days. Some give this orally also, but give the higher dose and be careful not to choke her. For syringes and needles, you want 22 gauge and 3 cc/ml.

Although yogurt has probiotics in it this one is supposed to be very good http://www.amazon.com/Vet-Plus-Probios-Dispersible-Digestive/dp/B001BM1QRC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384656333&sr=8-1&keywords=probios and there are many probitoic capsules that can also be used. Tetracycline can be used...

Tetracycline can be mixed at 2 strengths (at least the Duramycin10 brand.) If she is still gurgling in 3 days you can go up to the higher dosing of 800mg which I believe is 1 TB per gallon. Tetracycline can also be given up to 14 days if she is not better. Give her some probiotics in her food...

    Chicken gurgling

That does sound like the beginning of a respiratory infection. Have you had the chickens long? Some chickens can be carriers of diseases that don't show up until they are stressed. I would watch her for other signs, especially nasal drainage, eye bubbles, or swelling of the eyes or face. I had...
