Good point :thumbsup
Great thread here, one of my favs. Lots of great input here.
I've went from pure white jersey giants, to pure white naked necks...to crossing them. Now have some super big white naked necks that lay great and are meaty.
Soon, next yr hopefully crossing them with cornishX...
I thought possible giant also but they have dark slate gray/willow legs and dark brown eyes.
Hatchery non-sop birds though maybe might be that off type.
I have seen pics on here of white giant's with just slightly willow legs but not yellow.
My avatar? Was almost a yr old I think. I unfortunately had to cull him for aggression, attacking my kids.
Did hatch one white cockerel from him though on Easter that looks just like him and so far have seen no aggressive behavior.
True, but based on my experience with Jersey giants it's just deceiving. Yes they grow their frame first then put on weight, but I'll bet they still have as much meat or more as any other heritage breed chicken. Its just that the body is so big you'd think they would weigh more, chicken bones...
White Jersey Giant. I've had a flock for about three yrs now. Not sure his weight I haven't weighed him in a long time. Have one hen that's almost as big as him.
Ralphie's birds are something! Inspiration definitely.
A NN addition will be beneficial IMHO.
Cooler birds in the summer less stress and naked necks I heard need less protein cause they don't put as much into feathers?
I had planned on crossing my NN' s to cx but haven't yet. I hadn't planned...
Looks like a hatchery Plymouth rock to me? Could possibly have some leghorn in it. Any cx roosters I've seen that size are much broader/fatter and look like they're going to die not healthy like that.
Don't be afraid of naked necks and cold, they are super hardy birds! And the look, Lol! Always thought they were ugly myself and didn't want them until I got a bunch. They grow on you and become pretty normal quick, and the chicks, none cuter than a bunch of naked neck chicks! And in my area no...
Ahh! The secret is in the egg!

I've saved a lot of $ by fermenting. It's pretty easy. Still haven't seen any documented proof of it's benefits but I've seen savings on my wallet so only proof I need. I hear you on the corn base, I get 17% layer mash 50lbs for $10 from our local mill, hard to shy away from that.
Only processed four, started late and ran out of steam. Sure am loving the NNs easy plucking. Two of them were crosses and even though they had bowties had no more feathers than the two pure ones and also no hair either.
I just skimmed quick, recent posts, not used to this format yet but like it.
I always decapitated, thought it was better, instant death. Used loppers, tree hedge whatever, worked good. Almost got a pair of the pvc cutters? someone posted here until DW realized what I wanted them for, and $$...
It won't stick but still don't like seeing it.
Got absolutely nothing done last two weekends cause of the rain. Need to move a couple coops off the garden area. Cull a rooster and combine the separated naked necks to make room for the Easter hatched chicks. Working 12hr shifts this week so no...
We've had non stop rain for over a week. Stopped this morning. Now it's snowing...
I use our small pressure cooker for any older chickens, a old presto. I think it's just 4qt might be 6? , have to stuff the birds in but works great. I don't add anything but salt, chopped celery, carrots and...
