They aren't quite up to weight yet, I butchered the first one and it dressed at only 3 lb 4 oz! No panting yet, just flops around, using wings for balance and not able to stand... Edited to add.... The last batch butchered dressed about 4 1/2 lb to just a lil over 5 lb some of them!

What would the purpose of all that fat though? I end up just cleaning the fat out with store bought birds, is there a purpose other than for flavor? I prefer to put more meat on dem bones

Thank you for the compliment. Trust me the first guy wasn't all that smooth, but the next guy was way easier. I just learned you can pretty much just pull the skin off, don't even need the skinning knife until you get to the keel/breast bone to cut the connective tissue! The wings aren't like...

So we butchered some birds the other day. Most are Barred Rocks hens and a Leghorn hen, but the 2 roosters we did so far, 1 was a barred rock, the other a BCM mix, were hardly any fat, we skinned them and even though when feeling them up through their feathers didn't seem too meaty, but after...

Oh yes yes, that makes perfect sense now that you mention decomposition, duh. Here I am, a nurse, a Psych Nurse to boot, and you'd figure Id know, but not till you throw the RN slang into it, then I get it. Yes, the birds are relatively small to human body per say so rate of decomposition may be...

i do, I actually bought a digital hygro/thermo combo but its crap. I tried to test it, the humidity was spot on, but when I went to test therm at boiling point or glass of ice water, it broke the hygrometer. So I bought the analog (?) one in the reptile section

Thats is what we try to do, but I guess my husband got ahead of himself. Usually what we do is bleed one, I take it to defeather, then while I am de feathering, he is bleeding another, so then I take the defeathered bird to him for removal of innards while I grab the freshly bled one and take to...

What exactly is the meat "tainted" by? Also, sorry to pick brains, but when we butcher our meats, there has been a few times my hubby was quicker than I and we had 3 birds strung up to bleed out, while im still finishing up the defeather of 1. So does that matter too? Because the meat came...

Hi Ant Farm, I mildly forgot you are a part of this thread too, LOL. I did read the reply to it in the other thread, hehehe. Oh my gosh, how did they survive that temp? My bator has ran evenly about 100*, with the minor fluctuations during candling/weighing. I had it running on low humidity...

Ok, so I put eggs in the incubator on the eve of Dec 21st. Is tonight lock down or tomorrow night? OMG I am getting way too excited. I only had to purge 1 egg for non development. I candled them this morning briefly before work, and the aircells have dipped quite a bit since the last candling...

Why can't you still eat them after a heat stroke death? Does it taint the meat? Also, If you meet me half way, Ill take them! Our weather is bit more temperate! They might do good, and if they aren't great layers that is ok, I can use whatever eggs they do lay to incubate for meat chicks! But...

Yes I am thinking the same, perhaps 2 are hens as they are super small, at least compared to the other 4! I need to get some pics up of them though because I am thinking that green is a female too! Her comb is small, pale (ie not red like the obvious males) and legs aren't thick like Blue and...
