*peeks in momentarily*
x2 about dry incubation! Our numbers have improved a lot since we switched (albeit Fl is already humid as heck...)
Sorry I've been so sparse, life has been hectic lately!
That always happens with me. Last time it was disastrous (we received three bloodied trampled barbezieux chicks...apparently the post office received our chicks in the afternoon but didn't call us until the next day.... a literal nightmare, I've since learned to befriend your post master for the...
Did a weighing of the Sulm boys today. The smallest cockerel is 4lbs 5 oz. with his largest companion being 5lbs 5oz. We received these chicks on October 12th.
Here's the biggest boy, we're definitely keeping him. His name is Red. :-)
I'll say this about Sulms. If I could order JUST...
I'll have to look into this once I'm back on the farm computer!
Thank you! I really appreciate the honesty :) They're actually taking the entire carcass (I think they're freezing the spare parts or gifting it. idk.), just wanted to make sure breast was most of the menu. :-)
I'm keeping my fingers crossed we get 'em! We're SUPER stoked at the possibility. I think I'd be in chicken Nirvana with the Ix's. :)
And I went ahead and put it in their hands, I explained the differences in growth rate with the cx's, hybrid broilers, and then the slower heritage birds, so...
I appreciate that honest opinion! My heart of hearts wants to do the NNs, because I could keep the best extras too... (or my excuse to add NN pullets to the order.... y'know, the usual. LOL.) I'm glad to hear about the taste in their stock. I wish I had better yield info on dunlap's growth.
*Crosses fingers* If all goes well.... We may have some Ixworth's here soon. I'll report back in with that.
However, I did have a few questions for you all;
I had a young couple approach us to raise the birds for their wedding. They're having 80 guests and would like to serve chicken breasts...

Agreed! There's something so stinkin' charming about them! Even my cockerel's full-necked sister doesn't seem to have his best personality traits, even though they're full-blooded siblings. :P I'm excited to grow my flock, especially now that there's ample space to do so. :-)
Haven't been suuuuuuuuuuper active posting in here, mostly been lurking since not much has really been happening in terms of production on our end, still lots of setting up, so our flock is relatively limited to 'fancy' breeds. Although I do have some questions to ask. Our Sulms, which we were...
Well, I bought some Isabel Orpingtons and I also bought some Isbars for those infamous green eggs.... so far the orps are lap chicks and the isbars and legbars that are to be a part of my mixed laying flock are all super flighty... daily handling is in order
I'm thinking they mixed in Alsterier, the original breed of Styrian chicken. It would explain the red leakage in the Silver Wheatens and the pink-ish eggs. I'm still amused at them calling the Silver Wheatens "Gold Duckwing" on their website.
I've heard baaaaaaaaaaad things about their recent...
I wish I had a broody! Anything interesting to hatch under her? ;)
Our Sulm boys still aren't doing the job, they're still young so I'm not expecting it to happen anytime soon.... BUT our pullet has only skipped one day since hitting point of lay, they're more pink-ishs and not so white...
I would be FUMING if I were you. Hope that investigation ends in a fine or suspension of hunting license. the lack of common sense people have is astounding.
Back home we had pieds/wild-type, I've seen some of the "meat" type white birds, they're MONSTERS. Our ducks were quite large, but not comparatively to some of the new lines of whites out there (but again, my great grand-mother sold off most of her ducks in 2002? Not sure what kind of birds were...
