BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Roosters have a unique job from birth until death. Protect the flock and reproduce. Hereditary traits can come with the breed you select. Meaning that some were bred for game fighting and some bred for other traits. Some breeds carry a bad reputation attached to the roosters. Behavior as you...

What a waste! 42 incubator spots and only filling 6? Why not hatch 6 sets of 6 with space in between! Her son will then go insane. Ha.

Scaly shanks and feet that look like a prehistoric giant lizard can differ in appearance as to the breed of bird. I guess what I am saying is "that" appearance may not be not abnormal. Scales as you call them are less noticeable on a skinny legged chicken that the rooster of that same breed...

Bielefelders - I keep getting feedback related to this breeds stamina. Beautiful breed that seems to lack the hardiness it needs to be a good flock member without health issues cropping up. I have had some and I watched as one by one they just up and died on me. They just don't seem to have...

If in fact the disease was transmitted by waterfowl, why havent we seen more focus on these birds? Chickens and turkeys are a huge portin of our food chain more so than waterfowl. It seems if you are going to control the problem, you should start with where its coming from. Question - are...

So funny, at first I thought you were talking about my girlfriend! After 5 years of bliss, I have grown to like her! Ha ha.

Me either! How could mother nature play such an evil trick on such a fantastic bird. It truly does have benefits but if looks could kill, well-- what can I say.

The right strain is point on. This breed has potential but needs help thru proper breeding to be a home run. Difficult to find really good stock state side.

In over 5 years of raising and handling chickens, I have ordered lots of hatchery birds. I admit that I have had a blend of good and bad but mostly achieved the intent of why I bought them in the first place. We started with the intent of raising chickens for eggs and not meat but our ambitions...

I have a Canadian friend who has buckeyes from a pretty good breeder. Good egg layers but not much as a meat or dual purpose bird. They are known for dark meat if that is what you prefer. She doesnt seem that impressed with them. I seen pictures she sent me and they are beautiful but I could see...

Well, okay then. I don't like speckled sussex. They are cannibalistic and egg eaters. They dont get very big and really hogs at the feed trough. Enough said about those stupid birds. They were all put in the soup pot!

Hmm, it seems we all discuss chicken breeds to some extent already among other things. What speciffically do you wish to have discussed? Do you want me to brag about my birds or hinder thoughts on what not to do?

I cant contribute much on what to or not to cross. I "have" processed a couple of our blue orpington hens and they were not only tasty, but fantasticly a true dual purpose breed with some meat on it. I like the sound of dark cornish crossed with white cornish. I will be getting some...

Well, the first words out of my mouth were that it was a nice looking carcass. Your points of interest were point on relating to mating abilities. I have Belgian malines that are hefty in the meat category but have an extreme difficulty mounting a hen as a result of that bulk. I have actually...

Although its a nice carcass to cook up, I see the same thing that bothers me in my roosters. The pictured carcass has nice legs and thighs but appears to be lacking in breast meat. Huge breast bone with not much meat attached. A lot of rooster breeds carry weight but not in all the right places...

Sorry for your loss. I hate when I have a sick chick and I feel helpless. I myself am neither educated enough or gifted enough to solve a lot of health concerns.

I guess that's the whole point. We the owners are unsure just what the protocol demands from us. "Precautionary" measures covers a vast amount of allowables by law.

Interesting. I think they would have a difficult time convincing or coercing me without a warrant and sufficient proof. In fact, I myself would demand it. How about you?

Hypothetically speaking, do you really think they would kill your birds if they were indeed not infected? My problem is, I don't know how they are handling this.
