The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

She won't let me near them, she gets so upset, so candling them is out of the question. I thought I had a mixed clutch of kc's and scovies, but the kc's would have been due tues and I got nothing. So i'm thinking they may be all muscovies and be due this tues. Unless she's sitting on a few...

The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

Question: eggs are do to hatch in a few days and when i was feeding and watering mama, i noticed an egg was out of the dog house, like 5ft away. Is there any reason she would do this and should i leave it out or put it back in with her? Also, when I peeked in at her, 1 of the eggs was real dark...

The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

So to stop the fighting, I kicked the khaki's off the nests and out and my muscovy is sitting on the mixed nest now. Not to sure what will happen since the eggs are mixed. If any hatch at 28 days, i will know they are khaki's and any that are left will be muscovy's. Will she be able to continue...

Know i'm wondering, hmmmm, My last clutch was all muscovies with a muscovy mom and this clutch is mixed with the khaki's. Do they have 2 different hatch dates? I know muscovy is 35 days, but don't know khaki's. I divided the pen yesterday because all the ladies were fighting. The khaki's are on...

The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

Well here we go again. All my muscovy babies are sold and gone. I was gone a few days and now there appears to be 3 nests in the igloo doghouse. The muscovy is sitting on 1 and my 2 khaki's on the other 2, looking right at each other. I see them quarreling a bit and nudging eggs over to the...

Congrats to all on the ducklings and the ones yet to come. My first hatch ever of 16 are all gone already and i miss the little guys, so glad i can see some on here. However, it is nice to see mom and dad together all day swimming in the pond and him not alone anymore. Would like to thank Lydia...

The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

Well they will be gone tomorrow. Mom is ignoring them now, it's all about her and dad again. Them 2 are together all day and the last 4 kids hang out together on their own. So funny :)

That would be scary, I'm glad i don't have to deal with snakes here. Very rarely I'll see a gardener snake in the garden, but that's it and that's enough. lol

The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

No, there is another BYC'er on the Mi thread that may want the last 4. But mom has laid 1 egg a few days ago, so maybe she will do another clutch, hopefully smaller. My husband did want to try some for meat, hear they are not oily like other duck. Wait and see what happens, but they have been so...

The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

This was last week when they were 3 wks old, I let them out on the pond and to also see dad. He is protective and doing ok with them, but once in awhile he goes after one and grabs them by the butt and is rough. When i see him do that, I just put the babies back in the pen, he seems a bit...

If it stunk that bad, she may have been getting rid of a bad egg or one that wasn't fertilized anyway. They seem to know sometimes when there's a bad one. Hope for the best on the rest and that she's gonna be a good mommy.

Maybe she didn't cover them up because it's so warm out and she knows they will be ok. Not sure on the missing egg.

The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

My lightening has turned out to be a great mom. The ducklings will be 3 weeks old tomorrow and I will be allowing them out of their pen to see the pond and daddy. He has sat outside their fence alot watching over them and wagging his tail, I think he will be a great dad. Can't wait to get some...

The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

I thought my drake was trying to drown my girls at 1st, but found out that's just how they mate. Also it is better in the water, less chance of injuring their legs. Mine has held a girl underwater so long sometimes I will go at and yell at him just for my sake. lol

I sometimes get mine once a week and there fine. You can always do the water test if your not sure. Put the egg in a glass or bowl of water and if it sinks, it's good and if it floats, it's bad. @HooliganChicks -the ducklings look adorable
