When to help? When to worry?

No the person was saying that chooks who are hatched artificially for egg production are sterile. I just assumed that applied to all poultry:-/ She does look more and more full scovy to me but she's not quite right. Walking seems an effort so she just plops down and gets comfy all the time...

When to help? When to worry?

The black and white girl does. She's the young black girls mumma. I think I'm going to call them Lily(mumma) and Lola. Not sure what to call the lighter girl. Am I right in thinking she's younger? Doesn't have very defined colours yet so nothing springs to mind. She seems to be the underdog of...

When to help? When to worry?

I'm hoping so. I think she's beautiful all dark. She is only young though. Only just getting her pin feathers. Oh, and on the egg front, I marked the first one and put it back. There were two more yesterday morning and a fourth this morning. There's a different gal on the nest they're laying...

When to help? When to worry?

Not entirely sure the baby black girl isn't a scovy cross? The lady we got them from had some serious breeding issues.

When to help? When to worry?

He was living in a pen with twelve other drakes and twenty male turkeys. He was the smallest so had no feathers at all left on his back or wings. Just red raw stumps. The conditions were so shabby I was tempted to leave but I brought him so he could have a better life. He's slowly gotten some...

When to help? When to worry?

He's a fair bit smaller than my other drake but still a fraction bigger than the original girls. He's much bigger than the new girls. They seem happy together though preening each other:-) I think the younger girl I got yesterday might be a cross with indian runner? I'll upload a pic of the new...

When to help? When to worry?

And then I just assumed (the mother of all f#*k ups) that it applied to all poultry:-/

When to help? When to worry?

I was told farmed (for egg production) chickens were sterile if they were not hatched naturally. I didn't think to question this because not wanting half formed baby chickens in supermarket eggs seemed legitimate to me. Oh I feel very gullible right now:-(

When to help? When to worry?

And just out of curiosity, if I do venture down the incubator path will the ducklings that hatch be sterile? Or is that just a rumour I heard.

When to help? When to worry?

Oh. That does make sense. I didn't realise they weren't already formed and ready to grow and hatch as soon as they're laid? I shook it gently near my ear to see if it was solid rather than fluidy because it wieghed easily three times that of a chook egg and I thought maybe that meant it was a...

When to help? When to worry?

Nobody sat on it all day yesterday or today but. Wouldn't it be dead if there's a duckling in there? Plus I gave it a good shake this morning because it was so heavy. I mean it feels completely solid. No fluid in there.

When to help? When to worry?

Thanks heaps Miss Lydia. I am so grateful to have found this forum. You've all been a wealth of information and super lovely:-) So from here on in I just wait until someone starts laying. I'm sooo impatient about it all! I worry that they don't have enough cosy areas to lay in in thier pen...

When to help? When to worry?

Also, Miss Lydia, I'll let them repeat the process as many times as they're willing too. My boyfriend isn't enamored with the duckies like I am. He wants to start seeing there egg production cover the cost of having them. Because of this, it occurred to me that if they each only have one set of...
