    Well, there's a difference between a hatchery hybrid and a barnyard mix hybrid. The hatcheries churn them out to churn out as many eggs as possible. With the barnyard varieties, they take on the traits from the parents and haven't been selectively bred for high production.

    Why not look for a barnyard mix of some breeds you like? Then they will have hybrid vigor so are less likely to have health complications down the line. Could you buy eggs and hatch your own?

    I agree! They will have many more years laying and a longer life if they are not forced into unnatural production!

    they are also softer than most chickens, they have more feathers and they are softer. I LOVE the aussies! The blue/green sheen on the feathers is magnificent. I wonder if Australorps have better blood lines in Australia?
