First egg laid outside the nesting box yesterday. It wasn't that Janet forgot where to go, but they had been free ranging for a couple hours when Janet went back to the run, up to the coop, and into the nesting box to lay. I decided to give the dogs their turn in the yard, so I used a little...
Lots of eggs being laid since I was last able to check in. Congratulations!
I only have two girls, but they're little workers. Since her first week of laying in early July, Janet has only missed one day. Penny started out slow, but now she's on a roll. She was laying later and later in the...
My girls are squawky, especially Penny. She also does a great balk, balk, balk that could be used for a cartoon chicken. It's awesome. However, neither is all that loud in the nesting box. They'll make some noise but then they go into a bit of a trance.
Congrats to everyone on their first eggs!
We can't have goats, or any livestock other than a few chickens, but my in-laws have land. It's a fantasy of ours to raise friendly little goats on their property. Probably much more fantasy than future reality! I got my girls at about 5 weeks. You'll be amazed at how quickly they grow. Enjoy...
I'd love to see an egg come out, but I always feel like I'm invading their privacy if I open the nesting box from the outside and they're in there. They don't seem to notice me, so I guess I should try.
I can definitely tell the difference between the eggs now, but with only two, it's pretty...
Let my worry be a lesson to you. First, I was worried about them laying in the first place. Then about blood, then about regularity. Well, my two girls who are both new layers (13 days for Janet, I believe 8 days for Penny) have laid eggs three days straight. And yesterday and today, both in...
Probably. My vet doesn't do birds, but I don't know why I couldn't bring in a fecal sample. Janet laid another egg today, though, as did Penny so that was back-to-back for both. I suspect my boyfriend was late checking eggs yesterday afternoon and guessed that she laid later, or else she...
Yes, they're exposed to the ground in their run and when they free range. I haven't dewormed them yet, I've only had them since spring. I thought it would be part of my Fall and Spring rituals, though I want to do more research. It is summer here, but I live in California, so it will be rare...
Thanks! That was fascinating. Not that I was, but I will never take for granted what they go through to lay an egg. Janet is only laying in the afternoon and is on an every other day schedule, except for once when she went two days without laying.
They're RIRs so they should lay more than...
Penny laid her second egg early this morning and it had a little blood on it. I've read this is normal for a new egg layer. Has anybody had this happen? She seems perfectly fine and there's no blood on her.
Janet's doing awesome. 5 eggs in her first 8 days of laying. She always lays in the...
I'm too much of a newbie to offer advice, but we're going away on the 19th and I had the same fear. Luckily, the first started laying a week ago today and the other on Friday. Mine don't free range unless I'm home. They won't even free range unless I'm outside, and with the number hawks we have...
My other girl, Penny, just laid her first egg! I wasn't sure who was in the nesting box because they're hard to tell apart if they're not together, but the one down in the run seemed bigger and more attentive toward me, which is Janet. It wasn't confirmed until the smaller Penny came down the...
I get my straw at a feed store that's near me. I live in an urban area, so they never have a lot, but I can put orders in. I don't know if chickens care whether it's straw or hay, but since I use it mostly for my garden, I always get straw. One bale goes a long way, so if you don't garden, don't...
I have pine shavings in my nesting box, but I may get a fresh bale of straw for my garden and the nesting box. I put herbs in the box, too. I don't know if the chickens like it, but it's pretty and freshens it up. It also helps me determine if she's been in there, because they're disturbed.
So...
