DS has a pullet that's 21 weeks old day after tomorrow.
He said she was looking in the bushes and in the main coop (where she doesn't sleep) and under the shed, apparently looking for a place to lay.
He's super excited. =)
When my Cochin Bantam started laying, the first few had streaks of blood on them, so laying eggs is something that takes some getting used to, I guess.
I know what you mean about feeling like a midwife when you're right there. Wait until you start hatching eggs!!! =)
Yes, Millie is probably laying her egg for the day.
Josie is probably trying hard to wait her turn; I had to show one of my chickens an egg, then put her in the nest. Some let me do that and some don't.
Thank God for Maxine going about her business.
The dogs will probably get used to it. I...
You can start offering free choice extra calcium anytime; it's rare to get a chicken eating more calcium than it needs.
I crush their egg shells and put them in the compost pile; my chickens free range and have access to the compost hole. Any of them that want to can eat as much or as little of...
IDK what a luddite is.
I stink at the intro-web.
To post a pic, you can either right click and then click on "copy image" in the menu that comes up. Or you can click on the picture that looks like a landscape, there at the top of the "Reply" box.
Yes, the singing continues. I like it too. I...
Yeah, they'll probably all start laying about the same time.
The squawking was (at least an early or practice) egg song. It's like when a cockerel first begins to crow, and it doesn't sound that good, but eventually (most of them) get the hang of it and some of them even sound pretty nice.
Oh...
We have a pullet who's soon to reach POL. She's a New Hampshire mix (IDK what with; she was a gift to DS from a friend of the family). Anyway, her comb looks noticeably larger today and her comb and waddles have gone from rather pale to pretty red overnight. I'm thinking she'll start laying...
Yay!!!
My hens sing a pre-egg song as well as the very loud and long I've just laid an egg "song."
Did you take a picture of it before you ate it?
They are delicious, aren't they?!?!?! How did you have it? Do you free range?
Do you have other pullets that are approaching POL?
My Cochin Bantam went broody back in April; she had a "bad" broody molt (I don't think there's really a "good" broody molt, but I just mean that she looked ugly and bare for a while)...
I think her broody molt coincided with her annual molt (she was just about a year when she was done brooding)...
Oh, that's good to hear!!! I have one frizzle. I understand that the frizzle gene is dominant. Hopefully I can frizzle my backyarders.
I agree, they're so beautiful!!!
I completely agree!!! =D
I had a Leghorn lay twice on the same day; once very early and once very late in the day. It is rare, but Leghorns are more likely than most breeds to do that (my sex-links will never lay me two eggs on the same day, for instance).
I'm expecting some green egg...
Oh, cool! Ya learn something new everyday. =D I didn't know Leghorns could frizzle. ;-)
I like the way you Aussies do things!!! Frizzles should be a breed to themselves. They're a variety of feathering in other breeds.
Thanks =)
Congrats!!! Good move taking a picture; I didn't get a pic...
Thanks for sharing!!!
I can't pick mine up, but I've seen the squatting you're talking about. (and the reddening of the facial skin)
Good to know!!!
Thanks so much for sharing!!! =D
5 laying hens, the pullet who's supposed to start laying this month, and four more should start laying next month. I do have 2 nest boxes; they're in the coop where the hens won't lay anymore. I'm working on setting up a second laying location on the back porch so that they don't have to wait...
Out of curiosity, I have hens laying in a five-gallon bucket on my back porch. I have one pullet hitting POL this month (her vent looks like she could be laying, but it's not as open "enough" for me to say she's laying) ... Anyway, the hens that are already laying monopolize the bucket pretty...
