Thanks DesertChick! I was feeding organic but it was getting very expensive when I had over 100 chicks I was growing out. Then the bear came and killed a bunch then the hawk. Everybody freeranged so I have no enclosures. Now I stopped feeding organic so I can save a bit to build secure...
On another note. I have my first batch of brahmas. Truth be told I got them because I like the look and they are supposed to be very docile, but heard they are good for meat as they are slow to mature and can grow rather large and still be tender. I guess time will tell. What I would like to...
Thanks for the replies everyone! As I tell my kids, the rooster is just doing his job protecting his ladies from what perceives as a threat. I guess I just thought that this breed would not do that. I'm surprised my other breeds have not. It's not to bad and he doesn't do it if I face him...
I need some advice! I have a single pair of Malines I got from greenfire farms last summer. My intent was to breed them this year so I could get some nice meat birds. I was also hoping to find a few unrelated chicks to grow out and add to the ones I have so I can breed them proper. I know a...
That's a shame. I lost 3 of my 5. Don't know what to. The 2 I have left seem strong thus far. I have 3 altsterier that are doing very well but I'm not interested in keeping them. It seems nobody but me is interested in rare breeds in my area. I'm hoping to sell my extra chicks at a...
Eggcessive I had a salmon faverolle chick once but it was hatchery stock and had very bad scissor beak. We had to cull it because she could no longer feed herself. That was my very first experience with chickens and haven't bought hatchery stock since. I would like to give them a try again...
I'm so glad to hear the bresse are such good layer and of large eggs. Do you just have white bresse? I have blacks and blues. Went with blacks because I heard their eggs are bigger and white chickens are hawk candy in my area. Although a hawk got one of my russian orloffs.
congrats on the eggs Regin! DCchicken I had the same trouble with marans Roos a few years back. I have some bresse now how are the bresse Roos when mature.
I have 4 light sussex chicks from Greenfire Farms. I got them in a rare chick special. I was trying to sell them as I already have too many chicks of various breeds. I hear they are really good layers so now I'm thinking I might give them a try.
I should be receiving a rare chick special from Greenfire Farms today. It will include Malines, Sulmtaler, and black and blue Bresse. I think this is going to be a great opportunity to chart how they grow side by side. Also to compare personalities and egg production. I would say I can...
