Hot composting with chicken bedding and garden waste

@politicalcenter Looks awfully dry to me, have you added any water at all? @HennyPennyCO If looks don't matter, pallets can be used. Personally, I like ozexpats concrete brick system, seems to work nicely for him. He has 4 5x5x5 sections open on one side, and every time the first one is...

Hot composting with chicken bedding and garden waste

Well, still running hot, the temp has been above the capabilities of what my thermometer can register (55C/130F). Been adding some pee soaked bunny bedding and watering and turning every once in a while. Lazy, yeah, if I were to build the compost today, I would just have made it twice as big...

Hot composting with chicken bedding and garden waste

It's been a while since my last update. When I last emptied the compost, the quarter inch marine plywood separating the two halves had finally given up after 2½ years. Haven't gotten around to fixing it yet, and I don't know if I'm going to. We emptied the run and cleaned the bunny pen properly...

Hot composting with chicken bedding and garden waste

I have dog poop in the pumpkin bed, if anything harmful gets through 2 feet of soil, I'll be pretty surprised.

Hot composting with chicken bedding and garden waste

A bit of a compost update. I emptied the compost today, it looks like it hasn't been cooking all that well in the colder weather. But that was actually a positive thing, because I used all the raw compost as material for our pumpkin patch. I built a 5 foot circle out of fencing, lined it with...

Scott, confusing threads together, are we? =) But the foundation work you're referring to only started today, they've been running an excavator all day. Apparently they should start blasting sometime next week. My what? "Dish's"? I need some clarification on that one.

Hot composting with chicken bedding and garden waste

Starting to be time to empty out the left side of my compost once again, it isn't really heating up anymore, and everything has turned nice and black. On the right side I've got some nice composting going on though. But I have to say, it surprised me how quickly I got everything to turn black...

Carrots are actually biannuals, so they should survive winter well.

Hope you get it started soon! We're still far from being able to start next summers plants, but in a month or two I'll get my maters started.

The worms would be interesting to try, but I doubt Karin would go for it... My hot box is living up to it's name today, the thermometer isn't showing all that high readings, as it's quite far from the center and on the other side of the divider, but if I were to guess, we're getting close to...

Hot composting with chicken bedding and garden waste

Temperatures are rising, the thermometer measured 22C (54F) today, and it's pretty far from the center, so I'm guessing it's close to 30C in there already. The frozen parts seem to have thawed. We cleaned a bit more poop from the animals and added that in there, but now it's pretty full again...

Hot composting with chicken bedding and garden waste

So, as the compost was getting fuller and fuller, and not doing a thing due to the severely cold weather, I kept trying to pour about a gallon or two of warm water into it daily, but that didn't do much when temps were around -20C (0F). About a week ago it warmed up though, to around -5C (20F)...

Hot composting with chicken bedding and garden waste

I hear you, last winter I was out in freezing rain, trying to trim down my egg nest hatch with a woodworking knife. I had to take it down half an inch, even though it had about an eight of an inch of clearance in drier time. But the rain hit it directly, making it swell. Now I have a rubber lip...

Yeah, on a foot wide door you can get a quarter inch difference, something to take into account when building.

Hot composting with chicken bedding and garden waste

Well, at the moment my compost is pretty cold, it was down to about 3C (35F). I did a bit of turning, and added about 2 gallons of warm water, in which I had mixed some yeast and sugar. I'm going to have to tend to it daily for a while now, and maybe get some secret ingredient in there again...

Hot composting with chicken bedding and garden waste

Kusanar, how's the compost doing? I haven't been updating this thread in a while, but my compost is doing fine. I've got two compost cages full of resting stuff, I need to put it to use in the spring. Luckily I already have a project planned for it. I might need to get a third one at some...

Bunny pee and poop is great too. *Edit: This is the only context where that sentence is acceptable.

That sounds like a great setup too. Be sure to post the link to the jumbo tumbler article, that was a cool read.
