Somewhere around the 50 chick mark this morning. Lost 2 that managed to drown in 1/8" of water. Quail chicks are both clumsy and have no regard for one another, so they were probably trampled and just happened to be near the water at the time. Lesson learned. Today is day 19 so I'll clean out...

Moved 38 fluffy quail to the brooder this morning. I'll give the remaining eggs a day or two before cleaning out the incubator and starting over again.

Left for work this morning with zero pips. Came back 11 hours later to find, by my best count, 28 quail chicks and more on the way. Looks like none of the largest eggs have hatched so maybe they take a little longer?

Today's the day. About 70 eggs made it to lockdown. I saw some rockin' and rollin' this morning, but no pips yet.

I did that twice while candling last week! I got lucky that one of the cracked eggs was a clear that I hadn't checked yet. I've also been pretty clumsy when collecting eggs, I've dropped 4 or 5 already this week. I've also cracked two while rolling them around (turning) in my DIY incubator...

Found the rotten egg pretty easily last night - it had a big crack in it. It was stuck in the turner rail and so was the egg next to it. I'm lucky that I had enough empty space that I could move the rest of the eggs to other rails and then take that rail out. Had an issue with my DIY incubator...

Checked on my eggs this morning and there's a definite foul odor in the room. Not looking forward to getting home from work and inspecting ~170 eggs to see which one is bad.

Day 9 for quail eggs in the hovabator, day 3 for the ones in my DIY incubator. About 170 eggs total. I need to start keeping a journal or calendar by the incubators, because now that i have an automatic turner I lose track of what day it is. It was a lot easier when I was counting down the...

Ha! I consider it pretty tedious at this point. I don't like having the incubator open that long because the eggs cool pretty quickly. Jumbo eggs are a bit bigger. I still get some small ones, but I also get some that are twice that size. I have seen pictures of jumbo eggs over 20g, but most...

Candled 91 jumbo coturnix eggs on day 6 - my first batch from my own hens - and I pulled 12 clears, plus one I dropped a clear egg on and cracked Some of the clears had visible weaknesses in the shell when candling, so they may not have been infertile and instead just failed to develop. I'll...

I finally broke down and got a hovabator with turner and quail rails for the 91 eggs I set last week. Last batch was 66 and I just rocked my DIY incubator back and forth :P

Day 6. I'll see if I can wait to candle until tomorrow, but I'll probably throw whatever I have (probably ~60 eggs) into the empty incubator tonight.
