Try checking the temperature with a digital thermometer intended for taking your body temperature. They are by far the most accurately calibrated thermometers that you can buy.. and they are intended to cover the same range of temperatures that we use for incubation. Obviously it's not the most...

Hooray for more wyandottes! I'm getting a little more confident about the sexes of my 6 week old BLRW. I'm thinking I have 4-5 boys and 2-3 girls. Ugh. I'm having the worst luck hatching females from them. Hopefully, I'll at least end up with a nice trio of them. I'm debating having one more...

Any air that is blowing out is being replaced by more air coming in from the other vent holes in the top and bottom of the incubator. The temperature doesn't fluctuate much and it is consistent no matter where in the incubator it's measured. That's the most important part, preventing hot and...

I'll explain this as best as I can. My husband actually did most of the work, but it only took about 5-10 minutes. Inside of lid: we chose an empty space in the middle to put the fan. We poked 4 holes (1 at each corner of the fan) to attach it using zip ties. There is a vent hole directly...

I don't add water until day 18. My humidity stays around 35-40% without it which is about what I like to aim for. I bump it up to about 70% for lockdown. I also have to suggest adding a fan. It really really helps. My hatches improved dramatically after I did. It really does help to keep the...

So many cute chicks! Congrats to everyone! I ended up with 21 chicks out of the 28 that made it to lockdown. The 3 eggs that were questionable didn't hatch. Neither did the one with the weird air cell. That leaves 3 that looked good at lock down but didn't hatch. I had one hatch this morning...

I don't know if it's bad or not when the chicks roll the eggs around. I do know that it stresses me out though! I can't help it. It just worries me. For my last two hatches, I've cut the bottoms out of egg cartons so that they are only about an inch high and then set the eggs in those. It keeps...

I think we're up to 16 chicks out of 28 eggs. All 4 of my white eggs have hatched and all but 1 of my brown eggs hatched. 11 blue and green eggs still aren't making much progress. Of those 3-4 were questionable at lockdown and one has a massively screwed up air cell that I never expected much...

So many chicks hatching today!! Hooray! I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed that everyone has good hatches!

I had about 5 more hatch over night, including 2 from my blue eggs. I'm not sure which chicks they are though. I have one gorgeous little blue chick... I wish I knew who her parents were too. All seem healthy and adorable

I was concerned about my 2 eggs that externally pipped before I could take out the turner and increase humidity. One had hatched this morning but the other hadn't progressed. I was afraid that one would have problems. It hasn't expanded its pip at all. I've been checking the incubator regularly...

I woke up at about 5 am to lots of peeping. Two chicks have hatched and several more have external pips. Both chicks hatched from my brown eggs. The moms are buff barred so their chicks should have sex linked colors. One that hatched is a male. The other was fathered by my buff EE that I no...

Well, I got my eggs out of the turner and bumped up the humidity just in time. I have internal pips in many eggs and now external pips in 2 eggs. I pulled 2 more eggs out. So that leaves me with 28 eggs. 3 are still questionable since I have a few eggs that I just can't see through. 9 black sex...

So exciting!!! I can't wait to see photos of your little fluffy chicks! Things have been crazy here. Between my dad's birthday yesterday and the random appearance of a stray dog in my yard today, I had completely forgotten about my eggs. Yikes. Looks like another day 19 lockdown for me. It's...

Yes, you can add it if you really want to. I do it fairly regularly. You really don't want to spread out the hatches too much though. If you think you'll be inspired to add another egg tomorrow, just set this one aside until then too. I recommend candling this egg before you set it, especially...

YAY! Day 18 here too. I'll probably pull my turner tonight. I'm going to put eggs in my bottomless egg cartons again so they don't roll around in the incubator.

Welcome! Barnvelders are beautiful. I hope you have a great hatch! That is so cute! I hope she has friends to play with soon.

As long as you don't drop any eggs or shake them, you probably won't mess them up. Other than that, I just suggest using a really bright flash light in a dark room. Since they're pretty far along already, you won't be able to see a whole lot. A big dark area in the egg is what you want to see...

It shouldn't.. But as the chicks grow in the eggs, they'll start generating some heat too. It's not uncommon for that to raise the temp slightly. An increase in room temperature will definitely do it too.

Give it time. I got my first incubator (and turner!) for Christmas last year. I never hatched an egg in my life before this year.. For my second hatch, in February, I drove 1.5 hours each way to pick up 2 dozen hatching eggs from someone that had breeds I wanted. When I got there, she offered to...
