    It's a reflex to squat as if in submission for rooster, whether or not you do have a rooster in the flock or not - as I don't. To see if they squat, touch their back, they'll squat down…It's a sign that they are maturing and hormones are surging.

    Mine are only 19 months old, but the do the squat on and off. It's a hormonal reflex, I think. If they are broody - nearing it or exiting it - they don't squat. Those who lay regularly do squat at times, and at other times they don't. I think it happens when their hormones surge.

    Mine squatted several weeks before started laying. Look for really red wattles/combs and around the eyes. Watch for some irritable PMS action in mornings and it will them be imminent.
