The 6th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

That is great! She will likely keep laying through the winter too.

I put out a dog kennel--a small one and put some pine chips inside with water and feed outside(flock raiser). Move Mom into it along with the chicks and shut it for the night if you have predators. Let them back out in the morning. I had them separated from the flock but they might be fine...

The big end has an air cell in it. It will get bigger as the egg incubates. Check the size on the days of incubation on the chart. Adjust humidity accordingly. I hope you have a great hatch!

Can you set up a temporary pen or fenced off area in your run? They will work out the pecking order through the fence. It can take a couple of weeks but is often faster. I do have this in my notes:

The person I am hatching for was bragging about only feeding the chickens scratch all winter--Poor things are in bad health this year and it shows in the hatch rates--and bad hatches.

Is it a bit of scratch each day? Most of their feed should be chicken feed--especially in the winter.

It should be fine. Corn might be a bad grain for them to eat--wheat and oats are said to be easier for them to digest. Go do some research!

Some breeds go through a couple of molts before the adult feathers are in. They do not always look ugly and feather out nearly as fast as they lose the feathers. One sign of this is when you see chicks running around with feathers in their mouth. Another is a bunch of feathers in the brooder.

They are probably just molting. Feathers have a lot of protein so they will eat them at molt.

The long term plan would be to separate the ducks from the chickens. The hen may attack the little ones--I would put her into something like a dog crate until she is healed up and then move her into the chicken only pen.

Separate her and treat with vetricyn wound spray or something similar. Hopefully she will be ok.

It would be a good idea to get her away from the drake--ducks have an "appendage" while roosters do not and hens are not able to handle that. The Drake will kill her and any other chicken hen he mates with. She likely does not have a disease but may have a ripped up egg laying tract.

I let them see each other through the fence wire first for a while. You can integrate them in pairs or more but it is not a good idea to integrate singly. It helps for the new ones to have a buddy or two for protection.

They should be 3\4 the size of the big ones. It may work sometimes but a lot a times the big ones will think the little ones are dinner and not a flock mate. I have had this happen before and it is not pretty.

Yes, try the yeast. You can also use poly vi sol without iron--just a drop or two in the beak twice a day.

The 6th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

There are different colors, red kote and blue kote. They are wound dressings that change the color of the wound. Blue Kote is for chickens and covers up the red color--red makes chickens peck and if they draw blood they will sometimes go into a frenzy and kill the injured flock mate...
