Miss Tawny, my 3 yr old hen who was raised with Pedro my roo has just recently started rejecting his advances. He moves in for the mount and she does the shuffle at him. As he backs off she does it again. Have any of you seen this? It's spring, she's not molting, she's laying regularly and...

Not sure if you've tried it, but I find wrapping the cord around your elbow and keeping the cord taught between your arm and your torso helps tremendously. (A trick I was taught by my highschool shop teacher) Gives you much finer control over the movement of the stick. 😏

What a beautiful boy! You make some very good points. In all my efforts to replace my original beta polish rooster with a rooster that is equal to my alpha, Pedro, I have learned to see things in this light. In hindsight, Paolo the Polish was actually a much better beta than I gave him credit...

Oh I am so sorry! The one little peck I saw on the video in itself was no indication of such aggressive behaviour. I am so sorry you went through that. I culled My Samuel this morning too. Rough day.

Was it just this one peck or was there more to it? I don't think he was being aggressive, looked like he was just giving a scolding to a chick that was moving in on the food he seemed to be calling hens to (or maybe he was just eating). Was there more to it than just what was in the video...

Oh what a lovely sight seeing chickens roaming in freshly dug earth! They do slow down the process, I try and get a few shovels turned while they're not looking, but they always seem to have one eye on me and the next thing you know they have me surrounded!

Let the chickens out this morning, and after taking care of food and water, I went inside to get a coffee & take care of a few things. 15 minutes later I came out to hear Pedro's serious warning call & found them all inside the pen & under the covered section. I scanned the horizon and sure...

Wool is not just a great insulater, but as natural fibers, along with cotton, is so much healthier for us to wear or sleep on and under. The synthetic fabrics that most of our clothing is made from is actually so unhealthy to be wrapping our bodies in. Polyester, for example contains many...

Okay. This made my day at work! I played it for the non-chicken experienced ladies and they were utterly shocked. One jumped at the point of strike🤣. One said "You hear about mama bears, but who would have imagined a chicken would be that scary!" 😂

I love the names! My sussex is Agnes 😊. I want more, they seem to be curious, sassy, bold little ladies with so much character! Everybody around here knows Agnes, she's always up to something!

Wow! That's a game changer! And that explains why you can't leave storebought meat uncooked in the fridge for more than a few days, given where it's been before it was packaged. Thanks Molpet! I'll read the article shortly.

Do you leave them in the fridge for 10 days before cooking them? Forgive my ignorance, but I thought they would spoil after such a long time. Of course, it wouldn't surprise me to discover that it was all juat mainstream meat propaganda I grew up with. 🙄

Yes, they are indeed. I gave him another shot with 2 of the young ladies who seemed interested in joining him this morning, and it went better today. As soon as the EE pullet squawked he let her go. She became a little gunshy of him after that and kept dodging him,but to his credit he didn't...

I'm sorry about Dig, @Shadrach I actually came on here this morning hoping to hear good news, as I am dealing with my own Dig, Sammy. Sammy is still young, at 7 1/2 months old & he has become a nuisance. I have him separated from the others in a pen of his own, attached to the big pen. At...

Well unfortunately, my flock will be contained for a little while. The largest Bald Eagle I've seen came by this morning and tried to attack. Fortunately they were all by the treeline & a large blackberry patch to take shelter. Pedro got 10 home safely, and by the time I got to where they had...

The only hens that I have had attacked by a cockerel or roo are the 2 hens that refused to submit. I culled the cockerel, after the 1st atack. Then shortly after, culled the hens, because they became prey to the rooster after that. They had stopped laying, were generally bullies, and now...

I agree with you on correlations and causations being messy and hidden. And my scope of experience is quite a small scale, but I am not alone in seeing the difference of lifespan (and quality of life in elderly). My grandparents generation of farmers (12 siblings,) lived well into their 90's...
