    Real temp lows hitting -18.

All ducks look great this morning. Everyone came pouring out, ate, drank and are preening in the sunshine. Chickens are all doing chicken things. I got 4 chicken eggs super early. Unfortunately 3 were frozen and split.

HAHAHAHA.....no. No foil wrapped mealworm. I fluff it up because they compress it so well. Normally I do that first thing in the day. Today it had to wait. I did not want them forced into going out if they felt like staying in. Frost bitten feet would be my biggest concern with duckies.

I closed the coops about half an hour ago. Everyone is moving well, no shivering and they ate well. The feed dish of dry food holds 8-9 cups of feed. There was maybe a full cup left. All the birds are in their respective coops. Some say the birds huddle together when it is cold. I haven't...

This is very true. The trick is knowing when cold is to cold and learning to read their behavior. Reading them is what I am working on.

Exactly! I can tell when my dog is cold or a chicken is cold but ducks are a bit new to me since I hadn't kept any in nearly 20 years. So far I have yet to see a duck actually shiver. Bringing them in the house would make my 5 big dogs very happy. 😲 Not to mention the human house would be...

Not in the least. My better judgement has been telling me that they have open water, good food, dry bedding in a secure wind proof structure and to let them be ducks. To gain information from people who see these temps and also have ducks and make sure all the boxes are checked on duck...

    Real temp lows hitting -18.

Technically they came out first thing this morning then went back inside after getting a drink. My relief was in seeing them decide to come on out and eat, drink and preen at 2 pm. They were checked on every hour of the day. While I have to go out there to check on them in their house I can...

Yeah.....but we are talking 70 degrees colder than that.

I am extremely fortunate we are not dealing with deep snow. I think if we had feet of snow I would be rather grumpy too. We are sitting at -3F right now. I was relieved to watch them file down the short ramp from the coop. They are all moving well and looking good.

 Ducks do survive in the wild.....even here and places colder. I doubt anyone is running pond de-icers, heaters or even providing them feed. I just checked on everyone. Standing air temp outside coop -7, inside coop is reading 0. The sun is out a bit and hits the south and east walls...

We have been spoiled by a very mild winter so far too. I will keep observing them. If I do end up doing some heat it will be just a warming spot not trying to make the structure tropical at all. I don't think my chickens will need anything extra.....the ducks though....dunking that head made...

It's crazy I am less worried about the chickens in this weather. The 3 elderly bantam cochins are scratching around in their run right now. Almost all of the other chickens are milling around. The run has around 3" of large flake pine shavings across the whole thing.

Everyone looked good this morning. They got a quick drink and headed back into their house.

Those are awful low temps! I do have 6-8" of large flake pine shavings in the coop. So far no one has acted off by shivering or anything screaming emergency. I see you are way up in Canada. Definitely more used to keeping birds in extreme temps than I am. I appreciate the input. I need to...

I know, I know. Ducks are tough BUT this is insanely cold. The group is 7 welsh harlequin ducks just under a year old. The coldest will be tonight so added heat would be for just today, tonight and shut off tomorrow by noon. The coop is a 5x8 walk in structure. I have sealed oil space heaters...
