Back in the day... When I knew little about chickens. My roos ate layer as well. I never saw issues from it and my roos were 5 years old when I had to move into town and give away all my birds.
Greenkelp,
I find my big gals need a lot of landing space coming down from the roost. My roosts are just 24 inches off the ground but they hit hard if space is limited. The 6 foot of landing space has mine aiming for the doorway to void crashing.
Mine fit well through a 15 inch wide by 20 inch...
I just learned a lot too Huntress78.
Thank you for the education.
I have hatchery stock all from the same hatchery. My buff is the worst for meeting any standard at all. Every defect in the book save vulture hocks. Even the BA are larger in height.
My light is much closer but still far from...
You are very welcome. I absolutely love my big gals. Even if the Light Brahma is a bit standoffish.
Just because I LOVE this pic of them having a chat as pullets.
My roosts are 2 foot up and the three brahma here do fine. The only thing is they need lots of room to get down.
Now there is a bantam cochin in one of the pics with Cinders the Dark Brahma. Others in the pic include some Black Australorp and I think the Speckled Sussex is in there.
Edited...
Good to see there are options for the young flock. I do hope everything works out for them.
With my set up I can keep a limited number of birds. I would be devastated to lose any for any reason.
Mine were hatched in mid Feb. They were laying by the beginning of September. Now they are following along with taking winter off.
My old ladies must be a bad influence on them.
I have not posted on here in a while. My Brahma have been laying for a while now and are still very cool to have in the flock.
We have been battling the mice as many others have been doing as well this fall.
The only issue I have come across with them is they are a bit to docile in my particular...
I hope they are ok Uzair. THAT is very hot indeed. We have fared better here in Colorado this summer only having a few days over 40 degrees Celsius. I cannot imagine the worry you have right now for them. You have been far hotter than we get.
Also hot here in the summer. I give mine a large shallow pool to stand in if they like. I make sure there is always a shaded spot for them in the run. I also give them watermelon or frozen fruit/ veggie ice cubes. (More like ice blocks since I freeze it in a cut off 2 liter bottle.)
I hope...
BLooie,
You certainly had an adventure getting them! I am glad they are laying now. My 4 are not yet laying or egg squatting so I am hanging in there. Honestly if mine never lay it will be ok with me lol. I have so many others that are laying there are more eggs now than I can use or sell...
Mine are eating Nutrena All Flock. I tried the other brands available but found them lacking and the birds not looking as good.
This winter I may try and special order some game bird feed. Cannot seem to find it as a regular stock item.
I am glad you can keep it if it turns out to be a male. I am not allowed males where I am so would be totally bummed to have a friendly one and have to give it up.
