Looks like I won't be ordering Marans, but, God willing and the birds cooperate, I will be getting hatching eggs from the lady who bought my Blue Cuckoo Marans today -- in exchange for Blue Australorp hatching eggs.
That leaves about a dozen birds from Ideal. I'm toying with the idea of...
That's a good suggestion.
I figure that I'll start with a mixed hatch from my own flock and select the lighter-colored eggs that will be easier to candle to make it easier on myself. Then hatch some of the purebred Blue Australorps and some sexlinks made from my Marans, whose eggs are likely to...
Ideal is the only one I know of that goes by dollar amount (IIRC, it's a $30 minimum unless that changed for this year). They ask you to either agree to accept "extra males for warmth" or to buy heat packs if its a very small number of chicks shipped in cool weather. I personally am fine with...
There's no guarantee on feather color though. Like the regular EE's they come in a variety so I could order 15 of them and not get even one that was black, white, black and white, or blue with no red or yellow.
We're going to try raising Cornish X for the first time this year once we have our freezer situation worked out.
I might choose a breed at some point. I might create my own strain of mixed mutts to suit my purposes. Right now I'm still trying out a bunch of them.
But I just ordered my...
I had Delawares in my in-town flock and liked them.
I do like white birds but would be the last person on earth to criticize anyone else's sense of chicken aesthetics. There are enough chickens in the world that we can all be happy with what our flock looks like. :D
That's a good idea for the flock moving forward.
So far the rational for selling them as started or POL birds is to give me time to choose the ones that seem best.
For example, right now I'm selling the 2 worst Blue Australorp cockerels and keeping the three best. In a couple months I'll pick...
The latter.
Also, time of year -- I don't want to order chicks for late June through August because it's hard to keep them cool enough when 95-95 weather is common.
🤦♀️ 🤦♀️ 🤦♀️ 🤦♀️ 🤦♀️ 🤦♀️ 🤦♀️
I can't believe I forgot the Delawares!
I want 6 of those -- 5 pullets and a cockerel.
I had very much wanted Delawares last year but both Welp and Ideal were out of them at the time I placed my order. Ideal got more later, but by then I couldn't add...
Seriously, he understands that I'm going to buy an incubator and hatch from the flock and that I have to place an order for the reasons I explained in the original post. but going through over 50# of feed in a week while we wait for birds to sell is too much.
I like black, white, black-and-white, and blue. Lavender would be fine -- and I have 4 split-to-lavender pullets, but I'm not going out of my way for it on purpose.
I know that the red can be hidden under other, dominant genes, but I am going to avoid knowingly introducing it into the flock...
