Best Breed of Chicken for my Daughter to show at fair??

It is funny you said that...at our first fair we just brought one per per girl. It worked out okay but then when our second fair came around, one silkie went broody and moulted at the same time. We ended up not going because I hadn't entered any backups. We learned from the mistake and this...

She's tried with mealworms...not with scratch. Hmmmm. Worth a try I suppose. Thanks.

Best Breed of Chicken for my Daughter to show at fair??

The ONLY problem we have using a silkie is walking the table. She just...doesn't want to. BUT, like you said, she is my daughter's pride and joy, so losing out on a few points because of that is worth it. She was beaming when she was telling the judge about her bird, going over her strengths...

Best Breed of Chicken for my Daughter to show at fair??

You might need to make a certain number of posts first. Technically, yes, you can show whatever you'd like in the fair. If you are under 18, are you in a 4H or FFA program? If not, and you won't be doing showmanship, then you want to stick to a good quality bird of one specific breed...but...

Best Breed of Chicken for my Daughter to show at fair??

Oh yeah, I'd definitely do some sort of bantam for her at 7. My daughter is 8 and struggles with her silkie. And I love my silkies, but the clean legged bantams do often show better. Good luck!!!!

They will also ask you things specific to your bird breed. What kind of comb, any distinguishing breed features, etc. The other link you got for showmanship procedures is great too! Ive used it myself for my daughters.

Also adding in, depending upon what she is doing, she *could* she the EE. In showmanship, breed doesn't really matter as they aren't judging the breed to the standard. If she wants to enter the bird in the exhibition portion, she will, of course, not be able to show the EE. My friend's...

Best Breed of Chicken for my Daughter to show at fair??

Depending upon the bird(s) it should be fine. I know quite a few people who keep many different breeds/species together successfully. Silver Laced Wyandottes are usually Large fowl and not bantams, although I think there is a bantam version available. I agree with the advice given above....if...

Best Breed of Chicken for my Daughter to show at fair??

Weird...I wonder why. Try getting a silkie to move across the table. It is a bit funny to watch though. And I agree with the shiny stick comment with the modern games...whoever said that is correct. They want to nibble at it because it looks tasty tasty.

Best Breed of Chicken for my Daughter to show at fair??

I agree completely. My daughters wanted the silkies, so we went with silkies, but I am wishing we got a smaller, clean legged bird as well. The silkies are awesome..but much harder to handle. Getting a silkie to move across the table is tough work! The kids that have the modern games or old...

Best Breed of Chicken for my Daughter to show at fair??

Wow guys. Not every bird is going to be someones cup of tea. No need to insult any type of bird. My daughters do 4H. My middle daughter who is 8, is showing a smooth sizzle (silkie cross) and still struggles with a bantam bird like that. I've actually been looking at getting her either a...

Best Breed of Chicken for my Daughter to show at fair??

You are best getting at least 2, as chickens are social creatures. I would stick with Old English Bantams or Modern Game Bantams if she is new to showing and handling chickens. They are small, easy to show, and usually easy to find. Silkies are awesome birds for kids, and have the most docile...
