Yeah, I can see that.
Buckeye bantams aren’t that pretty or useful. I like them but I’ll admit it is the d’Anvers that really catch my eye.
And people that just want something cool looking probably aren’t going to benefit the breed by breeding them, so there’s no reason to just give them away.
A perhaps happier reason rare breeds are cheap.
Sometimes we just want to share our breed and not let them die out.
Back when I was into Buckeyes, I got a bantam Buckeye pair for free. The idea was to give a free quality pair to a youth as long as they would breed and promote it. (Ok, calling...
Unfortunately it is really hard to know what they do charge because on Facebook nobody posts price and they don’t in ads either and that is where many of these birds are being sold.
Fayoumi’s and Cemani’s are not in the Standard so I imagine they are trying to prey on rich folk who want fancy poultry and don’t care about exhibition at all. They certainly couldn’t win shows. The d’Anvers is very surprising though. Maybe Cali inflation is worse than I thought.

So true! Often the money for the birds that sell for the most isn’t going to the breeder since they are donated birds. Unless it is a 50/50 auction or something in that vein.
Oh and typically the rarer the breed, the cheaper. Because the rarer, the less likely it meets the Standard or can win at a show. And there is a reason it is rare. It is unpopular and low demand.
Lol, I can’t believe we both mentioned Foley. It was the only website example I could think of.
I didn’t see your post because I was writing mine but
5,000 is crazy.
Maybe for a bull it is reasonable, maybe an ibis or an eagle, but a chicken?
I honestly have never heard of a chicken going for 5,000 dollars, not the show ones, anyway.
And I’ve never met a breeder who actually sold their best since those are the ones they will breed from. I imagine those are priceless. So maybe they would price those at 5,000 as a farcical way to keep...
