    My chickens do dirt bathe. It's just dry dusty soil. Not red/clay, or sand or anything. And no leaf material. Any plant matter in their run has long since been gobbled up. The stuff on/in her feathers is definitely not dirt or poop. I pulled out the ones for the photos, but left most of them...

    I'm inclined to agree with you. And the molt appears normal. She's past the feather loss stage. The feathers are basically all in. The bottoms of some are still wrapped in the little clear flaky sleeves that need to break down, but nothing unusual at all.

    Yeah. The vast majority of her feathers are coming in normal. Just a few are doing the "splitting open with black clumpy stuff inside" thing. There's just so many flakes. She's three years old. Just her so far. I didn't check the others yet.

    That's fine. I feel like if it was some sort of parasite you'd know right away. I don't think there's too many super rare obscure ones of which nobody has ever heard. I just hope somebody can provide a positive ID of the issue, just for my mental wellbeing.

    It doesn't melt into blood when you add water though. I'm as sure as I can be, without chemical analysis, that it isn't blood.
