When they try to crow they'll stretch out their neck and breathe in as much air as their little lungs can hold. I'm not sure when hackles come in on a Maran's but I'd say about 4-9 months is when they should start showing for typical roosters .

He is a cornish, bantam sized. Flighty but pretty sweet, so I guess he is a rooster. I knew they matured slower than other breeds, but wasn't sure of the tail. Thanks for info!
Is this a hen or rooster? I thought rooster because it crows, and it looks like it has pointy hackles..But I'm not sure. And it's legs are thicker than the dark two that I have. But it has no sickle feathers and it is 6 months old now.
