    I should add that I close my girls in at night. They are only in the run part of the day. I let them out for closely supervised free ranging every evening. ETA: So does the OP, so I think OP and I are in the same boat.

    This is exactly what I do. The coop door in my weird set up opens into the covered run, so the inside of the coop is always sheltered. My weather is very forgiving, though, being in Northern CA. I do have to tie it open. It blew it shut and locked the birds out once. Oops. They were not happy...
