Free range alternatives to broiler pens, tractors, and coops

As you wish. We had no intention of "bashing" anyone, merely pointing out that over stocking pasture pens may not be the way to go and using Salatin as an example. We'll leave you at the feet of clay....

Free range alternatives to broiler pens, tractors, and coops

Yeah....he was my hero until I got to visit his place and got to see it all in action. I was no longer impressed and was downright disgusted by the end of the day. I saw things on his place that you see in some CAFOs just on a smaller scale. If you had told me the same thing before I...

Free range alternatives to broiler pens, tractors, and coops

His whole premises for low stocking rates causing reduced weights is food competition. While that works well for his cattle and having them clean up all the grass in his rotational grazing plots, food competition in broilers seems like a moot point. Particularly if you are advertising pasture...

It did! How old are those birds, Buster? I wish I had gotten the poultry netting with the squares such as yours....darn birds are 7 wks and can STILL go through mine. I took it down from where I had it to use for them and just placed it around the garden to try and keep them out...didn't...

Free range alternatives to broiler pens, tractors, and coops

Free range alternatives to broiler pens, tractors, and coops

Yep. I have been free ranging for 7 wks now and have spent $96 on feed. They forage better if you don't offer continuous feeds, you spend less money if you don't offer continuous feeds, and if you offer different feeds than broiler mix it is cheaper. It all adds up to big savings. Right now...

Free range alternatives to broiler pens, tractors, and coops

Lots of poultry netting~ or just use your dogs...you have a good plenty! I bet you wouldn't lose one bird, Buster. Tarping for shade and cover areas is easy to do with push in stakes and a tarp~ like the one in the far right of this pic. You could have several of these for rain or sun...

Free range alternatives to broiler pens, tractors, and coops

Salatin does his free range layers in poultry netting with a GP dog in the netting along with. When he wants to give a new area, he just shuts them up at night, hooks their eggmobile to the tractor the next morning and moves them along, taking the fence and the dog along with. The only cover...
