Integrating chicks into flock at 4 weeks old.

I so agree with @aart, as usual! Mine are started out in the wire brooder pen in the run from the start, and start mingling at 2 weeks (supervised). I gently herd them in and out of their little portal doors until I know they can get back into their brooder pen if they get spooked or need a...

The doors I had were pretty easy for them to spot and I do like the cardboard idea as well.

As usual, I agree with @aart - making sure they understand the doors is critical. I have two..one at the end of the brooder pen and one on the side closest to the open area of the run. When I first start letting the chicks out, the adults are out in the yard. Then I gently “herd” the chicks...

Grower is fine too. I used All Flock and Grower interchangeably...... it’s a 50 mile drive one way to the feed store so I bought whichever they had, or whichever was freshest.

But...but tape measurers have numbers and stuff on them...little black marks the manufacturer couldn't even make uniform in size!! You're talking to a woman who has to count the dots on the dice when we play Monopoly or 10,000, and who has to PAY someone to be my Cribbage partner!

Told you I was no good at this measuring thing....Ken says they are a little over 3 inches wide and about 5 inches high. I was going to make some smart aleck remark about how that inability to know how big something really explains a lot but :duc

@azygous NO say it ain't so!!!! The portal doors were brilliant! An inspiration to me and many! We swear by them!! Saying you don't believe they are necessary with wire dog crates anymore is like Santa Claus saying there is no Santa Claus!!! I brag them up (giving you credit, of course) all...

Integrating chicks into flock at 4 weeks old.

Oh, I was so afraid you were going to ask that question. You know how precise and accurate I always try to be when doing something like this. I guess the inner measurement of the doorway would be about 5 inches wide and 6 inches tall? Shoot, I dunno....we just put a piece of wood up against...

Integrating chicks into flock at 4 weeks old.

I copied an idea from @azygous when I started outdoor brooding a couple of years ago. For the first few batches of chicks I was just propping one side of the brooder open just large enough for the chicks and too small for the Bigs to follow them in. But if you've ever seen panicked chicks, you...

Nice job, @aart with good photos! I've been a fan of super early integration for a long time as well. Mine are fully integrated and the brooder pen taken down and removed from the run by the time they are 4 weeks old. Hiding places are always good - in addition to the portal doors in the...
