I wouldnt dare think of covering the pond. That's just too risky. They'll be fine. The water wont freeze with them on it, The little bit of movenment they prduce even when sleeping on it is enough to keep it from freezing over. Even with it be a small pond. It will still have to be well below...

as long as ants and or mice arent getting into the feed, you can leave it as long as needed as long as it stays dry

either would be fine, they arent going to eat it, and if they do calcium is really good for them anyway. I wouldnt use any pelletised stuff though, there's a good chance they would eat it if it's small, and possibley get impacted by it. and hay or straw if fine as long as you change it out as is...

as for changing the water, now worries whith that, as long as it's not smelly or green, you'll be fine, they guys live in swamps in Madagascar so they arent to finicky The pump sounds fine. I always used pool snad filter's and pumps but we 're talking 10's of thousands of gallons in mine. No...

    Hottentot and Ringed Teal Ducks

yep, they are the smallest duck in the world, about 5-6 inches long. As for the feed ratio, it has everything in it you'll need, it is made of grains anyway. As for the peas, I have never given any to any of them, but wont hurt, if they'll eat them. The whole grains can be anything, corn, wheat...

    Hottentot and Ringed Teal Ducks

yep, proud of you! You did a great job, think I see two spoiled rotten ducks already, were you surprised by just how small hottentots were or did you judge it right?

    Hottentot and Ringed Teal Ducks

Quote: That's true, I never gave mine one, but in a small set up, it could help with cutting back on pond nastyness. they loose a lot in the water when wetting it down, then it sours and makes a mess over time, but you will have that anyway, Like I said eariler, just place both it and you food...

    Hottentot and Ringed Teal Ducks

I would use the smaller ones and place them as far away from the pond as possible, they have a bad habit of running back to the pond to "drink" down their food and get it all in the water causing you to have to clean the pond more often

Yep sounds good, yes any Purina dealer can get you tha Mazuri, like I said, Purina makes it, so it comes from the same suppiers. As for the wire on the roof, that makes sense now if cats are a probely definately do something like that if they can jump on top, I have lost more waterfowl to dang...

    Hottentot and Ringed Teal Ducks

yep that's all sounding good. And yes that is floating catfish food at the zoos. I wouldnt put the wire on top though if I read that right, the elatic nature of the netting is by purpose, it is much easier on them when they fly up and hit it, the wire will just stop them the net will bounce...

    Hottentot and Ringed Teal Ducks

You can use that high dollar Mazuir if you want, but it's way over prices, course 1 bag would last you for ever with 2-4 ducks. Purina Gambird diet is all you really need, and 1/3 the cost for 50# bag than a 40# Mazuir. 1/4 cup should feed 2 hottentots all day, Just put you a small bowl out...

Quote: I hear ya, over the next 2-4 yearts, I fully intend to get all of them back , and some I didnt have as the rare stuff seems to have fallen out in price, where the common , dime a dozen ones have sky rocketed, ?? Go figure right, Stuff that use to be $5000 a pair are now $800 and stuff...

    Hottentot and Ringed Teal Ducks

They're ducks, they wont get out of the rain I have never once put a shelter on any waterfowl enclosure, they just dont care for them, it would serve as a good shade giver for them in the hot summer months if you wanted to do a partial deal though. Being a small pen, yes raise the dirt level...

    Hottentot and Ringed Teal Ducks

looks like a great design so far. Personally, avoid solid sand pens, it is very abrasive to their digestive system. I have seen them start pooping blood after just a few days on solid sand, it will cut their insides at times just because they eat so much of it and it's so sharp. Sand around the...

I have kept thousands of these things over the years, and am always...

    Hottentot and Ringed Teal Ducks

yes 1 inch wire will be fine, welded wire is best. It will last longer than chicken wire, netting is a bad idea on sides, like you said, way too easy for a critter to go threw and, bare in mind an adult hottentot is smaller than the palm of your hand (smallest duck in the world), so keep it all...
