Are hybrid chickens still 'all natural'?

Quote: No, either way your not going to be wrong. Worse case scenario you don't like the breed you chose and you try another one. We have all been there done that as far as choosing the wrong breed. Even people that preach dual purpose chose the wrong breed to suit there needs. Sometimes you...

Are hybrid chickens still 'all natural'?

My 26 Dark Cornish didn't eat anywhere near that much per day even at 20 weeks, although I don't know exactly how much because they were sharing a bag at a time with my turkeys.

Are hybrid chickens still 'all natural'?

Quote: You know, Jeff, you may just have something there. Hmmmm... After reading the articles I've been reading tonight I'm considering adding Delawares to my experiment. They were apparently the meat bird of the industry just at the time of the switch to the Cornish X. Maybe I will raise 25...

Are hybrid chickens still 'all natural'?

Quote: That has been my experience. In fact, I'll bet home grown pasture raised Cornish X tastes better than that. I raised some Broad Breasted White turkeys on pasture this year, same breed as the industry. They were exponentially better than store-bought. We served them at various public...

Are hybrid chickens still 'all natural'?

Quote: Sure it does. It just means different things to different people. I've defined what I mean by it, and I don't feel the Cornish X fits that definition. And a hybrid is a bird that is the result of breeding two or more recognized breeds. If you breed a hybrid, you will get widely varying...

Are hybrid chickens still 'all natural'?

Quote: I don't know about browneyebuttafly, but for me those are two of the most important things. As to saving money, if that was all that mattered I would buy my chicken at Walmart.

Are hybrid chickens still 'all natural'?

From what I have read, I think the Buckeye is a good choice. I'm going to try some this spring, myself. See how they stack up against my Dark Cornish and the hybrid birds I will be ordering in.

Are hybrid chickens still 'all natural'?

Then I guess I agree with your uncle. I'm not against small operators and backyard folks raising them. They do have their pluses. Just not the pluses that would make them appeal to me personally. And they don't fit my personal definition of natural. They definitely aren't sustainable.

Are hybrid chickens still 'all natural'?

Quote: That is not true... they breed like any other chicken. That ain't what I read, but okay, since you've bred them I reckon.

Are hybrid chickens still 'all natural'?

No, Jenny, I was talking to the OP. On the issue of AI, the difference is most cattle can breed naturally if you want them to and if they are allowed. These birds can't. They can only be artificially bred. That means they can't breed naturally, which would fit squarely under my own personal...

Are hybrid chickens still 'all natural'?

Since I reject all certification labels as meaningless, let me say they are not natural because they can't reproduce naturally. Even if you raised it to an age where reproduction is possible, it isn't, because they have to be AIed. In fact, even the parents that create the cross have to be AIed...
