This is similar to the design we are considering only it would be larger. This would be in an electronet system (probably at least two) and we would open it up during the day to let them forage. We are debating floor with bedding or no-floor. There seems to be about a 50/50 split among day range...
Which issue of Grit was that? I just joined recently and haven't had a chance to go through all of the back issues. I'm having a hard time picturing your setup. When you say door, do you open that to let them range during the day? What is the size of your shelter and what is your stocking density9
This probably isn't the right way, but I saw a real pro do it and so adopted it.
I have a section that isn't as tight as the rest, bows just a little with the slack. I step on the top strand to bend it forward and down, making sure my shoe doesn't get caught in the netting, and step right over.
My dogs do the job of protecting for the most part. I'm using the netting to keep the birds in a particular area, so I can control their diet and their use of resources. I'm experimenting with placement of the feeders to accomplish that with one batch, and the netting with the other, to see...
I don't have all that much more. Just a little under 8. But enough to do the thousand or so per year I want to do.
I have noticed day range folks tend to keep their birds in brooder for a little longer, some as long as 4 to 6 weeks, I guess because they are more exposed. I'm thinking of using...
Yes it was. Certainly food for thought. Thanks.
One thing that jumped out at me during my research... day range operations require less day-to-day physical labor for the amount of birds that you range. So, the more you raise, the easier it is per bird. You only move your netting once a week...
I was researching day-range broiler operations this morning and ran into two different studies that showed there is a slight difference between industrial confinement raised poultry and day range poultry. Weights were a little less for the day range over the same period of time.
Well, there you go, then. An excellent way to try out alternatives without going through the expense and trouble of building range shelters. I can test it and learn now, the develop my system in the fall.
I set this up last night, then spent the evening watching flying bowling balls.
That would be great, but for these Oklahoma prairie winds. I once staked down a heavy duty canvas and it ripped the huge stakes right out of the ground. :)
I have been getting some excellent feedback from a listserv on pastured poultry from some large scale growers, some of whom have 1,000+...
Well, that isn't clear. Some folks who free range also feed a lower protein percentage feed. The desired weight is muscle mass, not fat. How does more activity diminish muscle?
I guess they might get a lower percentage of protein overall if they are eating greens, but then that would directly...
I have raised various breeds for meat in Salatin style broiler pens. Now I am raising Cornish Cross meat birds, several pens of them, at the same time. As they grow, I'm not pleased with how crowded they appear to be, even though most of them are stocked 2 sf per bird.
I then saw Beekissed's...
