I have been using boot trays, just long enough to fit under my roost. Cover with some newspaper in the evening, fold them up in the morning and put in the trash or compose box, the easiest plan I have come up with so far.

I change the paper every day. You are right, the girls would tear it up. I try to put the paper in about the same time they go to roost, then take it out first thing in the morning. I do less composting than before so just fold up the papers and throw everything away. I use shavings in the hutch...

I use the plastic boot tray also, cover it with newspaper for easy cleanup. Shake the poop off the newspaper into the compost bin, throw the newspaper away. With only 4 girls it's manageable.
