The nipples need to point straight down or they will not work properly. The pin that controls the water flow has to be in a vertical position for it to close off the supply. If not, all the water will leak out.

I set up our waterer yesterday and put all five nipples I ordered in a five gallon bucket for the outside covered run. I am going to order more nipples for the coop and probably will only put in two or three in that one. Five is probably overkill for 6 chickens but I am new to this and did not...
