Update: I let the mama hen in our house with the baby chick and they have bonded and mama is sitting over baby now :) So happy!!!!!!!!!! Having my partner treat the coop today and watching over their interactions. Such a blessing! We're happy to have them in here, mess and all, until we sort out...

because not a good idea to treat mom and introduce chick all in the same day, right?

They are all out of the coop and won't be going back in any time soon. this is all happening on my front porch.

Also, baby definitely seems to consider me the mom at this point so this whole situation seems to be tricky. It's already warming up so the hope that she would snuggle close to mom seems to be fading now. I'm wondering if I should treat the mama and other hens with dust today, and have her sleep...

I'm feeling hopeful we can retain mama's interest in the chick if we keep them in close proximity to talk, but I worry about the babies health with mama's mites. If I dust mama how long do I need to wait until trying to put them together again? Thank you all for the help.

Mama seems to be doing her normal chicken clucking, no broody talks yet ... she did talk broody when I went out to the coop this morning and played a recording of the baby chick crying though. I'm beginning to feel this is a lost cause. hopefully things will turn around but otherwise I may not...

How do you dust her? Do you hold her and try to get the dust all under the feathers near her skin? Everywhere on her body? Or how? :O

I felt that with a small area, it would be conducive to them snuggling? there are too many mites in the coop for me to feel comfortable bringing the chick inside, and I'm not sure I have a box kicking around for the both of them.. It's possible though, I'll look.

I tried my best to hold her and inspect her at the same time.... I looked at her vent and didn't see any mites... nothing, at least from what I could see. I didn't get to do a thorough search through her feathers in that area though because it was hard to hold her. I inspected around...

I just moved mama into the Cat kennel I have... poor girl was terrified and the whole ordeal definitely put her under a great deal of stress. I'm hoping she's even in the right state to be introduced to her chick. I'm going to wait a moment and we'll see.

I just had this thought... what if mama still has mites on her? Is this a big issue if there is still a mite here and there? Should I treat her with DE before putting her in a crate with the chick if so? I haven’t inspected her closely but I’m thinking / hoping the mites aren’t too bad on her or...

I only ever remember seeing mites in the nesting box but who knows, they are tiny. I’ll do some inspecting tomorrow and will just sprinkle as needed maybe all over inside the coop as preventative method. Unfortunately because our walls of the coop are all wire mesh mites could easily be right...
