Ok, time for an update! My chicks are now 5 weeks of age, and I am thinking both are cockerels... :/
Chick A: A little bigger than chick B with more wattle growth.
Chick B: Somewhat smaller than chick A, but I still think both are cockerels.
Their legs don't look quite as long as when...
I think it's something to do with the breed's personality - the Japs are active and running around all over the place, and the Ameraucana just likes to cuddle! :)
Yep, I won't be ordering from McMurray anymore, now that I have access to show-quality chicks. McMurray doesn't breed for show quality birds, just for pets or production.
Hmm, I guess I should give some background info in them. The Japs are actually hatchery birds, from Murray McMurray hatchery. I am not a breeder (yet...), but I do show in 4-H. I kind of expected the hatchery to give me less than a good specimen of the breed, and knowing about the leg length...
Hey y'all! I've decided to post an update about my Black Japanese Bantams now that they are approximately 2 weeks old and have feathers! :) These two pics show the long legs well. The legs are longer than my Ameraucana Bantam's! The second shot is the best I have of a side view. (Please excuse...
Hmm, my Ameraucana bantam has shorter legs than the Japanese bantams... That's not right... XD
I'm guessing the Japanese breeder that supplies Murray McMurray isn't a good one. We guessed that the strain was too "pure"/inbred, which was causing many of the chicks to be weak and die shortly...
I ordered them from Murray McMurray hatchery. These are actually the replacements for the three I originally got that didn't make it. These look the same as the others and the picture on the black Japanese bantam page on the website.
However, I agree with you that they look nothing like any...
My new black Japanese Chicks! For now, the one with more white on it's chest is A, and the other is B. when they're older, I'll give them their permanent names. But they are doing really well - eating, drinking, sleeping, peeping, and pooping just fine!

Yep, my 4-H leader said they probably got cold on the way, route A (I'll just say route A and route B). The reason she suspects this is because the last shipment of chicks that came in January came on route A and most of the order died off, like this one did. The replacements were shipped on...
McMurray is going to be re-shipping the order after all! They will be coming with another order on Monday the 7th! There will be more chicks and taking a different shipping route, so they will be less likely to end up like the last ones!
Both of the remaining chicks were doing well last night before I went to sleep, especially In'ei. But when I woke up, In'ei was dead. Now I just have Yoru, who is doing well, but I don't know if he'll make it alone until next weekend when we are going to a show where I will be able to get some...
Kurai passed away today after I got home. :( She was very limp, not moving except to gasp or lift her head up when I gave her sugar water. She then started having "seizures" - curling her head onto her back. My friend says that once that starts, they will die. She was right! I picked up the...
Yup, before I chose this breed, I did a bunch of research on the genetics having to do with the leg lengths, and realized that, since they are hatchery stock, it was very unlikely that I would have gotten short legged Japanese.
Having long legs, it will help keep them off the ground and keep...
I found this picture on the McMurray website on the Black Japanese page, and they look fairly similar to mine. I guess they weren't kidding when they said "you may experience some chicks with medium to long legs" in the description!
