Maybe it goes away after the 10 minutes after you have read the thread that the notification is about.

Mine went away after 10 minutes.

I just discovered that the gold stars go away after looking at the notifications. This may be handy since the faded blue bar is harder to see.

I noticed the wider faded blue bar separates the read from the unread threads.
