Seemingly healthy chicken has a giant crop...

The vet recommended returning to a regular diet right away, and the hen did help herself to a bit of grit first thing. Unfortunately her crop is still not emptying overnight. I’ve got her in a crop bra, but her crop is so large and loose that even with the bra I could totally see how it just...

Saw the vet yesterday. They agreed that she needed surgery, and we went ahead and did it yesterday. The vet pulled 3-4 cups of grass out of her crop. Didn’t see any other material, just lots of grass. This hen is our grass gobbler, so no surprise here. She’s home now, I cleaned any sign of...

Seemingly healthy chicken has a giant crop...

Thanks for the advice, all! My plan is to continue the massage and coconut today into tomorrow before the vet visit. I have the feeling that the matter in her crop needs to be surgically removed. I'll update after the vet visit.

Thanks for the advice. I got some coconut oil and have done one massage session this morning. Will continue throughout the day. What would you recommend as a laxative? If surgery is needed I’ll probably get the vet to do it, assuming I can afford it. The hard mass is definitely spreading...

I have not tried oil of any sort, but I probably should. I’ll see about that today. I have olive oil on hand, no coconut oil. Just need to look up how to get it into her.

Seemingly healthy chicken has a giant crop...

Damerow’s book is helpful, she does a great job of providing very concise ways to distinguish impacted crop, sour crop, and pendulous crop. Based on this, I believe that pendulous crop is my hen’s underlying condition. It is possible that there is some sour crop, but the smell seems to have gone...

Seemingly healthy chicken has a giant crop...

I kept her off feed for the afternoon yesterday and through the night. In the morning her crop didn’t feel empty, but it also didn’t totally seem puffy or fluid filled. Perhaps a little puffy. What really stands out is that there’s a gold ball sized mass of who knows what in there. There seems...

Seemingly healthy chicken has a giant crop...

After giving her regular massages, I’m starting to suspect sour crop. During each I have noticed a pretty putrid smell, sort of similar to one of their nasty poops, and I think it’s coming from her mouth. Given this, I think she probably should fast for a little, get regular massages, and then...

Seemingly healthy chicken has a giant crop...

ok got it! The grains are part of a feed mix from Scratch and Peck, and they don’t get additional grains. I’ll look into it and see if perhaps they are getting too much grain from this feed.

Seemingly healthy chicken has a giant crop...

@CalBickieMomma — yeah, it seems possible that she has some impaction/compaction, but that’s based only on what I feel and not at all on a change in behavior or poop. @berryncherry — honestly I can’t say how much she’s fed. The three hens share fermented feed every morning, eat freely from a...

Seemingly healthy chicken has a giant crop...

Hi all, I have a year old black copper maran who seems healthy. She is active, eats and drinks regularly, poops as much as the other two hens, lays eggs almost daily, has bright eyes and bright red comb. But her crop is enormous! It typically feels extremely full during the day, fills my...
