Haha, you're right about not being able to tell them apart but if you had more than one chocolate or even all white I think that might be harder to tell. I have to really look and study on them to find a little spot of brown or something that is distinctive and then they go and molt and they...

How many males/females do you have? Just curious about the eggs that the chocolate and blue lay. Are they a different color from the fawn/white? Daisy was pure white but the other 7 that I hatched turned out fawn/white and basically hard to tell apart. When they were molting it was easy but...

Knowing there are hawks cruising the area don't let them out to free range. They need to be safe. Your net is a whole lot better quality than mine but those hawks are smart and sneaky and find the holes I guess. I didn't use to think that but I sure do now! I spent hours this afternoon trying to...

Stop looking at my ducks that way!

last May I had 11 eggs, some had been in the refrigerator and I marked those. 8 eggs hatched. Not bad for the first time. My neighbor had the incubator so she got 4 ducks and I got 4. We tried to "sex" them but that was a joke! I ended up with 2 boys and 2 girls which didn't work with my already...

So sorry!:( I didn't know hawks moved on. I know we've had them out back in the fields for years but they never bothered my ducks until now. I'm looking forward to my new netting getting here!

It was a 6' king snake which are good snakes to have around except when they wrap their 6' body around my little duck and squeeze the life out of her. They like eggs too!

I'd worry! We've got over 200 acres behind us with tons of trees and fields so I'd think that they'd stay away from our barn but nope. Of course last winter they did a lot of logging out there and it disrupted everything and cut down of habitat. This year for the first time we've been plagued...

Your ducks are so beautiful! I can't wait to see what we will get with your chocolate and blue! My ducks are inbreds so it will be great to have new genetics introduced to my little flock. You are so kind and I thank you so much. Now I'm excited about spring! And trying hard not to be paranoid...

Stop looking at my ducks that way!

oh my gosh thank you so much. Hiram is so close to us and I go there every week to run my errands. I don't want to hatch any more eggs at this time because it will be so hard to keep them warm and cozy. I did my incubating at beginning of May and they hatched on the 30th and 31st which worked...

Did the hawk attack Lily right through the netting? My netting is not good but I've got more on order which should be here soon. I have mended it a lot in many places with twine too. I think it starts to rot in the sun. I bought plastic this time which I'm hoping will hold out longer. In my...

Stop looking at my ducks that way!

no, they are hidieous, disgusting creatures of bad dreams! You don't even want to see one up close! I just looked up black vulture and that's not what we have primarily. We have the turkey vulture. It says that they don't go after "live" things but the blue vulture does! Chris Croson, West...

Stop looking at my ducks that way!

Oh my gosh yes, we have TONS of vultures. Turkey vultures I guess they are. We are in a very rual area (west of Atlanta and practically to Alabama) and they are always flying overhead and actually cast a shadow on the ground if they fly low enough. There are always people hunting and dressing...

I feed the birds too but the feeders are not near the barn where the duck run/pen is. So what about vultures? Will they go after live ducks? I know they go after anything dead but I wasn't sure about live creatures.

So crows will make the hawk go away or attack them? Will the crows bother ducks? I've got tons of crows around here and always wondered about that. Also, what about vultures? Tons of those flying around here all the time too. Will they bother the ducks?

I know you're not supposed to shoot hawks but all bets are off on that from now on. I've got to be honest. That hawk scared me and I was afraid to attack it without a weapon. This spring I had a 6' king snake kill Daisy's sister and naturally I came up on it and saw it happening. Once again I...

Stop looking at my ducks that way!

I think you're right about Daisy protecting his girls. When I would let them out to free range (only when I was with them) Daisy was the one who was always alert, not foraging but watching. It's like he knew something was lurking.

Stop looking at my ducks that way!

I ordered more overhead netting but it hasn't gotten here yet. I've taken apart some of my tomato cages and have rigged them up to cover any areas that the hawk can get in. Granted I'll have to get down on my hands and knees to get into their run/pen but that's ok. A couple of weeks I went to...

Stop looking at my ducks that way!

I went out to play with my ducks this afternoon and they were all in their pen....which never happens. All except Daisy my beautiful white duck. There was a hawk eating him in my duck run in the only part that had no netting across the top. I am so sad. I loved that duck so much. He'd sit in my...
