I use one of those sponges that has a scratchy side on one and a sponge on the other and it's working pretty good. I've got a designated duck egg sponge and another designated dog bowl sponge.

I made my own candler. I took a toilet paper roll and taped it to the end of my small flashlight. It works great. I suggest you do something like that to see what is going on inside those eggs.
