I think it's possible that, rather than yolk, the yellowish, sticky substance was actually excess moisture that was left in the egg. I've seen this happen with very dark-shelled eggs that didn't lose enough moisture, and it usually has a poor outcome for the chick. Did you do an eggtopsy?
