No they don't get covered in mud. My soil has no clay. It's a hard gravelly soil. It doesn't even stick to your shoes when it rains, only the chicken poo sticks, wet or dry.

Yes it does. It was mid 90s and humid. I was standing outside the pen near the hose and it felt 20 degrees cooler. It took my girls about 15 minutes to start enjoying it. Before their wings were spread and mouths open. Afterwards they were cool, as you can see in the previous post. GC

My girls slowed down last week when we were hot and humid, but didn't stop em. I got 29 from 5 hens, Sunday through Saturday. I usually get 32 to 35. GC
No don't use for water, hens stand on edge and it tips over as water gets lower.
